Gilbert Anthony Schmitt, 77, unexpectedly but peacefully crossed over on January 3, 2026 at home.

Gilbert, aka "Tony" was born 7 September, 1948 in Evansville, Indiana to Gilbert Theodore Schmitt and

Josephine Yates. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Nancy Lehmann, his stepfather

John Hahn, Sr., and his brother John Hahn.

Tony graduated from FJ Reitz High School and attended Indiana University, Ivy Tech, U of Evansville and U of Southern Indiana. He worked for Hahn. Inc. from 1967 to 1976.

Tony was a state and nationally registered EMT-A and Paramedic with Warrick EMS from 1976 to 1989.

He was an instructor in standard and in advanced first aid for the American Red Cross and the American Heart Association. Gilbert was a member of the Perry Twp. Fire Dept., beginning in 1970 as a fireman, advancing to master fireman, captain and training officer until he move from the area in 1980.

He later worked for many years at Boonville Lawn and Garden until his retirement.

Tony was a life member of the Boonville Antique Gas & Steam Engine Club at Thresherman Park, and a

former member of Eagles Lodge #427, Germania and the Cotillion Dance Club.

An avid genealogist, he was a member of Tri-State Genealogy Society and wrote the articles "From A

Grave Digger's Journal" for their quarterly journal, The Packet. He was a history buff and enjoyed

reading, genealogy research, dancing, gardening, carpentry & woodworking, cooking, and modeling

W.W. II aircraft. He said one of the highlights of his life was the day he was able to pilot a W. W. II

fighter trainer.

Gilbert is survived by, and will be greatly missed by his wife, Adele Sterneman Moore of Evansville; his

son, Christopher Schmitt of Evansville; three daughters Sarah Weigman (Max) of Clarkrange, Tara Payne and Teea Schmitt of Boonville; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Tony was also loved and will be missed by his stepchildren, Angie Hutchinson (Paul Schemmer) of

Pennington, NJ; Stephanie Boler (Joe) of Williamsport, VA; Sam Rheinhardt (Vicki) of Millstone Twp.,

NJ; Rebecca Kehoe (Ryan) of Ithaca, NY, and 7 step grandchildren.

Visitation with a short service will be on Saturday January 10, 2026 at 4pm. Family and friends are welcome to visit prior from 2-4 at Sunset Funeral Home, Cremation Center and Cemetery.
