Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pierre Funeral Home on Feb. 6, 2026.
Darryl W. Schmitt, 74, of Evansville, passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital surrounded by family.

Darryl was born on October 25, 1951, in Evansville to the late Joseph, Jr. and Nannie (Smothermon) Schmitt. He was a proud veteran of the United States Army; a member of St. Wendel Catholic Church, Knights of St. John Commandery 282, the Riverbend Association and West Side Nut Club. Darryl owned and operated Yard Care Plus and took great pride in taking care of his customers' lawns. Darryl loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and gardening. He especially liked to grow tomatoes and potatoes. He was well known for his blackberries, and he would share both the berries and the plants with anyone who wanted them. He always felt closest to God when he was spending time outdoors.

Surviving Darryl are his wife of 45 years, Donna (Hisch) Schmitt; daughter, Allison (Brandon) Long; sons, Andrew (Kristin Briney) Schmitt and Adam (Becca Putans) Schmitt; grandchildren, Isabel Long, Harrison Schmitt, Oliver Long and Wilhelmina Schmitt; a brother, Albert (Gloria) Schmitt; many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Darryl was preceded in death by a grandson, Theodore "Teddy" Long and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Joe and Allene Hisch.

There will be a Mass of Christian Burial held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at St. Wendel Catholic Church, Rev. Ed Schnur officiating. Entombment will follow in the St. Wendel Cemetery, where the Vanderburgh County Retired Veterans Memorial Club will conduct military rites.

Friends may visit with the family from 3:00 until 7:00 PM on Friday at Pierre Funeral Home, 2601 W. Franklin Street, where there will be a memorial service conducted at 6:00 PM. Friends may also visit with the family from 9:30 AM until service time on Saturday at St. Wendel Catholic Church, 10542 W. Boonville New Harmony Road.

Darryl's family extends a special thank you to the staff of the ICU Critical Care Team at Deaconess Gateway Hospital for all of their kind and compassionate care.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Wendel Catholic Church or to St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, TN.
