Gilbert Kenneth "Tommy" Sowers

Gilbert Kenneth "Tommy" Sowers, 91, of Richmond, passed away on Monday, November 11, 2024, at Baptist Health Hospital in Richmond.
He was born in Madison Co., Kentucky on December 15, 1932, the son of the late William Sanford and Lillie Durbin Sowers. Tommy was retired from the United States Army where he was a Veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. During much of his tenure in the Army he was stationed at Fort Knox and Germany. He was honored to receive the Bronze Star for Valor for his service to his country. He was a member of the VA Chapter of Richmond and the VFW which he served as Chaplain.
After his retirement from the Army, he was ordained to preach the gospel. He organized several churches and then served the Knob Lick Baptist Church for 25 years. He was a member of Linden Street Baptist Church and never stopped God's work. Tommy loved to fish and garden and was always witnessing and enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Through his recent stay in the hospital, he grew very close to many staff that captured his heart and them as well. He was a man that loved unconditionally and his family was everything to him.
Survivors include his wife, Betty Rae Young Sowers; two daughters, Tina Curtis (Matt) and Lisa Sowers (Doug Begley); two brothers, Donald Lee "Slick" Sowers and Ronald "Doodle" Sowers; one sister, Lena Francis Barnes; grandchildren, Tasha Proctor (Paul), Alicia Begley (Matt), Doug Bratcher (Casey), Olivia Columbia, Steven Begley, Josh Sowers, Gilbert Sowers, Chelsea Sowers and William Keeney; great-grandchildren, Wesley Proctor (Cindy) and Carson Proctor and several others; three great great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Tammy Sowers.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Mike and Kenny Sowers; siblings, William R. "Rusty" Sowers, Nancy Bishop Lynch, Wanda Faye Young and Anna Faye Barnes; a grandson, Jon Mansfield.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 1 PM Monday, November 18, 2024, at Combs, Parsons & Collins Funeral Home with Bro. Michael Barnes officiating. Burial with full military rites will follow in Richmond Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 11 AM – 1 PM Monday at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Wesley Proctor, Matt Curtis, Carson Proctor, Doug Bratcher, Jake Offill, and Ronald Sowers.
Honorary Pallbearers will be Donald Sowers, Mike Boyd, Emerson McAfee and Harold Richardson. www.cpcfh.com
