Giles "Drew" Godwin

Giles Drew Godwin, age 93 of Amarillo, finished his work on earth and was called home on Friday, June 28th, 2024.

Celebration of life services will be 10:00 AM, Wednesday, July 3, 2024, at the Carmichael-Whatley Colonial Chapel with Dale Moreland, an associate pastor at the Church of Quail Creek, officiating. A burial will follow at the Mobeetie Cemetery under the direction of Carmichael-Whatley Funeral Directors and Crematory. 

The family will receive friends before Drew's service from 8:30 AM -9:30 AM on Wednesday.

Named after both the villain and hero of a book his mother was reading, Drew was born October 18th, 1930, in Mobeetie, Texas. At the age of 15, the family moved to the farm in Mobeetie where some of his very fondest memories were made. In later years, he became convinced their daddy moved the family to the farm to keep Drew and his brother Bill out of trouble, and if you knew young Drew and Bill, that was very likely the case.

Drew married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Caldwell, in 1952 and were married for 53 years. They were absolutely devoted to each other. Drew loved Beverly deeply and cared for her endlessly until her passing in 2006.

He was a devoted family man and took his role as father to Michelle and Kristi seriously. He was their anchor and the best father a girl could ask for.

Drew was a man of faith and shared his love of God’s creation with everyone, especially his favorite place on earth, Lake City, Colorado. Here he spent countless hours digging for worms to fish, fishing, talking about fishing, teaching friends how to fish, and frying fish. He confidently maneuvered narrow mountain passes that any reasonable person would avoid. Drew and Beverly spent many a Sunday morning enjoying each other, talking to God, and admiring the wildflowers on the American Basin.

Drew was proud of his country and served in the Air Force as an airplane mechanic. He achieved the ranking of Staff Sergeant and spent time in Japan during the Korean War.

Drew retired from Diamond Shamrock as a terminal manager in 1989 after 30 years. He considered himself lucky to love his work and always held fond memories of his career.

He spent many hours in his shop woodworking. If you wanted it, Drew could build it. He was hard working, meticulous, a little bit of a perfectionist, and believed ‘if a job is worth doing, it is worth doing right the first time.’

At the young age of 88, he met his loving friend, Juanita Allred, and they spent these last several years enjoying each other’s company, jigsaw puzzles, coffee, and Drew’s famous margaritas. We would all be so lucky to find love again at that age.

Drew was a man of integrity. He was loving, kind, generous, incredibly good looking, steady, gentle, strong, and had the best sense of humor.

Drew is preceded in death by his wife, Beverly Godwin; his parents, Fleda and Willard Godwin; his brothers, Quintis Godwin and Bill Godwin; and sisters, Vircie Dysart and Thressa Patterson.

He will be dearly missed by his daughter, Michelle McNeely and husband Lane (aka ‘The Rookie’), daughter, Kristi Godwin; sister, Reacie Simpson; brother, Jay Godwin and wife Tria; grandchildren, Chad McLaughlin, Courtney McLaughlin, Cayla Qualls and husband Shane; great-grandchildren, Mackynzie, Cade, Keyton, Case; his littlest buddy and namesake, Kailin Drew Qualls; his loving companion, Juanita Allred; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
