Gladys Ross Bass, a cherished soul whose warmth and kindness touched the lives of many, peacefully passed away on November 10, 2025, in Canton, Mississippi, at the age of 88. Born on September 28, 1937, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Gladys grew up in a bustling household that would shape her into the remarkable woman she became.
Gladys was a beacon of love and strength for her family. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Tracy Westling, and her husband, Frank, of Canton. Her legacy continues through her adoring grandchildren, Hunter Ross Westling of Memphis and Peyton Fisher Westling of Oxford, who brought immense joy to her life. Gladys's sister, Barbara Apoka, and her husband, Mike, of Mustang, Oklahoma, and Olive Vincent of Grapevine, Texas, will fondly remember their times together. A host of nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews also survive her, each carrying a piece of Gladys's spirit in their hearts.
Gladys's life was built on a foundation of love, which was evident in her 61-year marriage to her beloved husband, Thomas Bass, who preceded her in death. She was the heart of her family and carried the memory of her late brothers-Bill, Roy, Sonny Ross-and sisters-Beulah Duke, Lucille Brantley, Ruby Hackler, and Belle Ashley-with grace and reverence.
A proud alumna of Culken Academy, Gladys's professional journey began at Westinghouse in Vicksburg. Her path led her to Jackson, where she married Tom on April 5, 1958. She later joined MP&L and served as State of Mississippi Credit Manager until her retirement in 1997. Gladys's work ethic and dedication were only matched by her commitment to her community and faith.
Gladys's passions were manifold, but nothing compared to the love she had for her grandchildren. She cherished every moment spent with them, and her presence at their sports activities was unwavering. An avid supporter of Ole Miss, Gladys bled red and blue, rejoicing in the camaraderie and spirit of collegiate sports.
Her involvement with the Credit Women's organization allowed her to indulge in her love for travel, exploring new places, and making lasting friendships along the way. Gladys was a charter member of Woodville Baptist Church and later found spiritual nourishment at Pinelake Church. She found joy in Bible study and volunteering, always seeking ways to give back to the community that she held so dear.
Gladys Ross Bass lived a life rich in love, friendship, and faith. Her presence was a gift to all who knew her, and her memory will be treasured forever. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary woman, we celebrate the legacy she leaves behind-a legacy of unwavering love, boundless generosity, and a life lived with purpose and grace. The family would like to especially thank her care givers, Lou Boykin and Betty Washington, for their care and compassion shown to both Mrs. Bass and to her family as well.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, November 13, 2025, at the Venue at Pinelake Church. Visitation will begin at 12 Noon. A graveside service will follow at Natchez Trace Memorial Park in Madison.
