Gladys Irene Welborn Morris

Mrs. Gladys Irene Welborn Morris, age 93, of Mount Airy, NC, passed away at Surry Community Health and Rehab Center on Thursday August 28, 2025. She was born the 13th of 13 children on February 20, 1932, to Arthur Hubbard and Laura Belle Peele Welborn. Mrs. Morris married her high school sweetheart, Isaac Edward Morris in 1951. They lived in Surry County 54 years until his death in 2006. She told her daughters that she had decided in the 8th grade of school that she was going to marry Ed Morris. Dreams do come true. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters and their husbands, Teresa and Dennis Scott; Cathy and Benny Leftwich; her grandson, Jason Scott and great grandson, Evan Scott. She was blessed with a large extended family of Welborn and Morris nieces and nephews. Mrs. Morris was a lifelong member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Mt. Airy. She worked at Renfro Hosiery Mill for a time. She also worked at Roses when it was located on Main Street. She finished her work career as the cafeteria manager at Jones Elementary and Tharrington Elementary until her retirement in July 1992. She was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Edward Morris, parents, Hubbard and Laura Peele Welborn, five sisters and brothers-in-law, Naomi Cleo Welborn, Lucy Welborn, Nancy and Porter Hiatt, Minnie Laura Welborn, Claudine and Doug Norman; seven brothers and sisters-in-law, Seldon and Cary Welborn, Garl and Mae Welborn, Calvin and Kathleen Welborn, Paul and Senia Mae Welborn, Silas Welborn, Joseph and Jessie Welborn, Richard and Barbara Welborn. Her greatest love was her family and lifelong friends. She enjoyed going places with her sisters, family reunions, spending time with her daughters and their husbands and doting on her grandson and great grandson at every opportunity. She was the heart of our family, and we miss her so much. A celebration of her life will be held at Moody Funeral Service Chapel in Mount Ary on Wednesday September 3, 2025, at 2:00 PM with Rev. Scott Schuyler officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 12:30-2:00 PM. Burial will be at Skyline Memory Gardens immediately following the service. Our family wants to thank all the dear people at Surry Community Health and Rehabilitation Facility and the Mountain Valley Hospice Palliative care team.
