Gladys Penick Pope died Thursday, 2 May, at Masonic Home. She was born 1 September 1924 near Lebanon, Kentucky, the second daughter of George Gilbert and Mary Alberta Grimes Penick, and was reared in Louisville. In addition to her parents, Gladys is predeceased by her husband, Douglas E. Pope, stepson, Ted Pope, and siblings Nancy Parker, George Penick, and Margaret J. Walker.
She is survived by her daughter, Gwynne Potts (Grover), son, Gary Tuell (Cheryl), grandson, J. Scott Karem (Liz), great grandchild, Ida Karem, and her sister, Elizabeth Lacer. Her family also included Doug's sons and daughter, Jim, Tom (Carleen), Gary (Pat), Becky Norris (Jim), and Ben (Johanna), their children, Greg, Josh, Jason, Chris, Rick, Katie, and Drew Pope, and Brad Norris, and ten great grandchildren. Additionally, Gladys was "Aunt Sisie" to many nieces and nephews, for whom she cared deeply.
Gladys was a long-time member of Beechmont Presbyterian Church and Beechmont Women's Club, a former Cabbage Patch Settlement House volunteer, and a twenty-year Hospice volunteer. Of the many extraordinary trips she and Doug enjoyed, she found Alice Springs, Australia, and Oaxaca, Mexico, where they wintered over many seasons, to be the most interesting, but any spot in Scotland was her favorite place. The last decade of Gladys' life was spent at Miralea, on the Masonic Home campus, where she delighted in many meaningful friendships that provided her with support and happiness.
Visitation will take place at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road, at 11 am on Monday, 6 May, followed at noon with a short memorial ceremony. Expressions of sympathy to Hosparus Health or a charity of your choice will be appreciated by her family.
