Glen D. Huey II

Husband, brother, friend, philanthropist, business owner, author, community supporter, expert woodworker, craftsman, baker extraordinaire, or just the Donut Dude. No matter what you called him, Glen D. Huey had a long line of success in everything he took on in his 66 years and an even longer line of lives he touched along the way.

Glen was born in Cincinnati and raised in Kings Mill, Ohio. Along with football, fishing, and showing Tennessee Walking horses, at the age of fourteen, Glen decided to use his father’s tools to help him build a Sheraton Field Bed. This marked the beginning of his love with woodworking and the first project in a long line of great woodworking successes.

After graduating from Kings High School, he attended the University of Cincinnati where he obtained an accounting degree. Glen partnered with his father to continue their home construction company, building in neighborhoods in the West Chester area.

Around this time, Glen met Laurie, who became his wife and life-long partner in adventure. The two were married in 1993 and together they built their first home, which is still their residence today, along with their two best friends, rescue cats Charlie and Chase.

After several years building homes and learning the finer techniques of reproduction furniture design with his father, Glen decided to join industry-leading publication Popular Woodworking Magazine, where he worked for over 12 years, eventually serving as Managing Editor and leading the charge to develop easy-to-understand, do-it-yourself woodworking content.

Glen was also the host and talent on a successful series of woodworking videos through The Woodworker’s Edge and published hundreds of articles that continue to be reposted and shared by the woodworking community. His reach at Pop-Wood included dozens of DVDs and authoring several successful books. His favorites were related to period furniture: Fine Furniture for a Lifetime, Building Fine Furniture, Illustrated Guide to Building Period Furniture, and Building 18th Century American Furniture.

Throughout this time Glen continued to design and build projects for furniture enthusiasts and home builders in the Cincinnati area. He left Popular Woodworking in 2014 to co-found 360Woodworking.com where he continued to share his expertise through videos, articles and teaching classes in woodworking and furniture making.

In 2018, Glen and Laurie thought it might be time for a new adventure. After months of planning and a decision to “go for it,” they took the leap into the culinary world of baking – specifically doughnuts. Glen and Laurie opened their store in 2020 in Liberty Township, and thus the Donut Dude was born. They made it a community affair by donating to several local charities.

Glen and Laurie’s love of donuts paid off as the Donut Dude racked up thousands of followers and became an instant success on the Butler County Donut Trail.

In reference to the “retirement” adventure of Donut Dude, Glen once said, “I enjoy talking and having a good time, so I just love standing out there and getting to know the customers. It’s been perfect, this is the perfect job for me.”

Glen was the son of Doris (d. 2017) and Malcolm Huey (d. 2008) and is survived by his wife Laurie, and also his brother Steven. Glen used to finish all his articles with the same three words, which we think are fitting for a life-well-lived or in his case well-built: “Build something great!” He surely did!
