Glenn Allen Beard, Sr, 89, of Schertz, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 7, 2023. He was born November 22, 1933, in Jackson, Mississippi, to Gaston Simmons and Mary Ellie (Pitmon) Beard. Glenn liked telling that his mother had him on 11/22/33 to make it easy for him to remember his birthday. His family moved to Foxworth, Mississippi, on his tenth birthday, at which age he started plowing fields behind his horse and working around the farm. Glenn graduated from nearby Columbia High School and Pearl River Junior College before enlisting in the Army in 1954, serving in Austria and Germany. He returned home in 1956 and attended Mississippi State in Starkville, where he met a pretty, young lady named Mattye Bell Johnston, working at a local bakery. This young lady became his bride on June 8, 1958; on September 17, 1959, they were blessed with a daughter, Rebecca Lynn; and in August, 1960, Glenn graduated from Mississippi State with an agricultural degree. After graduation, the young family stayed in Mississippi, moving to Mendenhall for Glenn's first job in the poultry industry. Glenn Allen, Jr was born on June 25, 1964, and they moved to Nashville, Arkansas in the spring of 1966 where Kayla Anne was born on December 4, 1968. Through the years, Glenn's work took them to Robersonville, Pikeville and Goldsboro, NC; Waldron, AR; Hazelhurst, MS; and finally to Nacogdoches, TX, where they lived for the next thirty-eigh years. During this time, Glenn retired from Tyson Foods at 76 after working fifty years in the poultry industry. While in Nacogdoches, Glenn and Mattye were members of Fredonia Hill Baptist Church, where Glenn served as a deacon and on multiple committees, and both served several years in the university department where they were called "Mom" and "Pop." Glenn was a loyal fan of Stephen F. Austin State University Lumberjacks where he had season tickets for Homer Bryce Stadium in the same seats for 35 years. In 2017, Mattye and Glenn relocated to Schertz, Texas to be close to Kayla and family and joined First Baptist Church in Universal City. Although they moved many times, they enjoyed lifelong friends from each place they lived. After moving to Schertz, Glenn had several bouts with severe illness and fought hard, but is now resting in the arms of Jesus. Glenn is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Mattye; children, Glenn Allen (Blanca) of Leander and Kayla (Humberto/"Boy") Saldivar of Schertz, in Texas; ten grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren, scattered throughout the United States; sisters, Myrtle Anderson of Starkville, Mary Brackman of Hattiesburg, and Edith Polk of Columbia, and brothers, Gaston Beard of Columbia, and Ralph Beard, of Purvis, all in Mississippi. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gaston and Ellie Beard; daughter, Rebecca Lynn Davis; and his sister, Marjorie Carney.

The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at 12:00noon at First Baptist Church of Universal City - with visitation beginning at 11:00AM. A private burial will take place at a later date at Holy Cross Cemetery.
