Glenn Henry Merriwether, 92, passed away on January 5, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born December 14, 1932, in Greenwood MS, Glenn was the youngest of five and the only son of Henry and Ellafair Frances (Kyzer) Merriwether.
Glenn enlisted in the Navy in 1950 and was a veteran of Korea and Vietnam. He served aboard two destroyers, one submarine tender, and three submarines. The last submarine being the USS Mariano G. Vallejo. Some of his service medals include China Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, and United Nations Service Medal. In 1960, he received the Imperium Neptvni Regis certificate.
Retiring from the Navy in 1971, Glenn and his wife, Anna, moved to Alton, NH, where he owned a country store, did masonry work, owner-operator long-haul trucking, asphalt driver for the tri-state. Glenn was a math wiz, and could fix anything mechanical.
Glenn enjoyed football and auto racing whether it was national or local tracks, and especially enjoyed NASCAR. He had a love of fishing and had a green thumb, having an abundant vegetable garden every year. He had been a member of First Free Will Baptist Church, New Durham NH, helping in the construction of the church building.
After his wife's passing in 2002, Glenn moved to North Carolina to be near his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. His service to others didn't stop despite his age. At 90, he would take others to doctors' appointments.
Besides his parents, Glenn was preceded by his second wife, Anna (nee) Costello; sisters, Wilna Pendergrass, Sammy Smith, Agnes Parker, and AnnaLloyd Sessums; daughters, Susan Merriwether and Judy Merriwether; and great granddaughter, Jennifer Lee Branch.
He is survived by two daughters, Glenda Biggerstaff (Greg Simmons) of Laurinburg NC, and Nancy Merriwether of Carthage NC; six grandchildren, Cheryl (Louis) Person, Savannah GA, Jody Peeler (Dalton), Columbia SC, Jessica (Israel) Branch, Red Springs NC, David Biggerstaff, Florence SC, Joshua Beachum, Concord NH, and Kaydie Gay, Charlestown WV; 12 great grandchildren, Xavier and Jordan Person; Kaylee Peeler; Isaac, Isaiah (Isa), Josslyn, and Rachel Branch; Natzu and Hazel Biggerstaff; Ace Beachum; Dayzie and Hollie Malone; two great-great grandchildren, Louis and Casey Person, and one due May 29, 2025; two nephews, David (Sylvia) Sessums, Lloyd (Catherine) Sessums, and one niece, MarySue (William) Reed.
