GLENN NEY (SANDY) STEINLE, JR.
October 9, 1945 – July 7, 2025
Glenn Ney (Sandy) Steinle, Jr. was born on October 9, 1945, in El Paso, Texas, where his mother, Margaret Mueller Steinle was living with her sister while awaiting the return of her husband, Glenn, from the service to our country in France. Baby Sandy and his parents returned to Jourdanton in April of 1946 and made it their forever home. Margie and Glenn built a house of their own as they welcomed Al, Jane and Don to complete their family. The Steinle kids were very popular on the block! Joyce Bowen, the little girl who would one day be Sandy's wife, lived just a few houses away, and by the time they were teenagers, they were in love. Their devotion would last a lifetime and become the most enduring treasure of their life together.
Sandy graduated from Jourdanton High School in 1964, and his athletic accomplishments earned him a football scholarship to the University of Texas, where he formed lifelong friendships and a passion for all things Longhorn! Joyce and Sandy were married in 1968 and both graduated from UT. They made their home in Austin where Sandy became assistant city auditor and Joyce taught elementary school. Their sons, Kevin and Todd, were born in Austin, and coached by their dad on various athletic teams. Summers revolved around skiing and fishing, swimming and tubing, at the Steinle lake house on Lake Austin, with college friends, family and whoever dropped by. Sandy was always behind the wheel of the boat, pulling an assortment of squealing kids across the wake. In the fall months, the whole crew spent time in Jourdanton hunting, fishing and teaching the kids to love the outdoors.
In 1983, Sanday and Joyce left Austin after the death of Sandy's father, and moved home to Jourdanton, where Sandy ran Steinle Insurance, Joyce taught, and the boys became Jourdanton Indians. Because of Sandy's early experience with computers in Austin, he was much in demand as a problem solver when technology arrived in Jourdanton, and he loved teaching people how to effectively use their new equipment. The fact is, he simply loved people! So soon he was involved in the Civic affairs of Jourdanton: The Volunteer Fire Department, Chamber of Commerce, and Rotary, and was a proud promoter of his favorite town all his life. Joyce and Sandy soon built a home on a hill under the oak trees close to family. Only a few years later, Sandy suffered an aneurysm while hunting in South Texas. He was deprived of many of his physical capabilities for the remainder of his life, but his spirit was intact. From his wheelchair, with his beloved Joyce pushing him forward, they accomplished what few ever do. They created together, for their children, siblings, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and friends a living example of courage, love, determination, and commitment that will never be forgotten. We are proud to accept that example as a gift.
Sandy died at home on Monday, July 7, 2025, and is survived by his wife, Joyce; sons, Kevin and wife Carrie and Todd and wife Nina; grandchildren, Clayton, Taylor, Curtis and Jack. He is also survived by his siblings, Al Steinle and wife Deana, Jane Andrus and husband Jim, and Don Steinle; sisters-in-law, Barbara Peeler and husband Alonzo and Betty Smartt and husband Bill; along with many adoring nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
On Wednesday, July 16, 2025, Sandy is honored with a funeral mass at St. Matthew Catholic Church, the same church in which he served as an alter server in their very first mass, starting at 11:30 am, followed by a celebration of life at St. Matthew Catholic Hall immediately afterward.
The family wishes to recognize the generous and loving commitment and service of Sandy's caregiver, Becky Lopez, the help of the Jourdanton Volunteer Fire Department and Atascosa County EMS. Your service is deeply appreciated.
