Her Life and Legacy

Gloria Joyner Congleton, a remarkable individual, passed away peacefully on Friday, November 21, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and inspiration. Her memory continues to inspire everyone who had the privilege of knowing her, shining brightly in our lives.

Gloria was born and raised in Nash County, NC. She attended Nash County Schools where she graduated from Southern Nash High School. Upon graduating from Southern Nash High School, Gloria attended Edgecombe Community College where she obtained an associate degree. Gloria became a licensed cosmetologist. She later attended Shaw University and earned a Bachelor's Degree in education. Gloria further her education and attended Central Michigan University where she was awarded a Master's Degree in education. Gloria worked as a Reading/English Teacher as well as an Educational Specialist and Assistant Principal in Halifax County Schools where she retired after 30 years of service. She was a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Gloria was preceded in death by her parents, Johnnie Joyner and Julia Brake Joyner; nine siblings, Annie Richardson, Johnnie Joyner, Jr., Dan Joyner, James Joyner, Dorothy Drake, Bertha McClain, Carol Malone, Mack Joyner, Bobby Joyner.

Gloria will always be cherished and remembered by her beloved husband, Jerry Congleton of the home; four siblings, Mildred Richardson of Rocky Mount, NC, Dixie Lucas of Spring Hope, NC, Annette Joyner of Red Oak, NC, Hattie Jean Joyner of Red Oak, NC; sisters-in-law, Ruth Chance of Greenville, NC, Judy Bacote (Leroy) of Robersonville, NC; brothers-in-law, Ray Congleton of Greenville, NC, Butch Congleton (Rajeayah) of Greenville, NC; a host of nieces, nephews each of them carries forward her spirit and love in their hearts, ensuring her memory continues to shine brightly in their lives.
