Gloria Grant Ruggles Bannay, 96, passed away on Sept. 5, 2025 at her home in Monroe, CT.
She was born in Bridgeport to Nellie Frances Lewis and Cecil Grant Ruggles. She spent most her childhood on a farm in Torrington, CT with her paternal grandmother, Mattie Crowell. Gloria was a direct descendant of Anne Boelyn. The family emigrated to America in 1631 on Gov. Winthrop's fleet.
In Gloria's younger years, she showed talent as a violinist and went on to play with the Bridgeport Symphony Orchestra. In later years, she became an avid painter, creating keepsake Christmas cards. Among Gloria's loves, she placed her four daughters at the top. She was compassionate and kind, told great stories, laughed often and was a connoisseur of old movies, naming every actor. She cherished life and had a ready smile. Gloria is preceded in death by husband William, his parents and hers.
She is survived by daughters, Lynn Altieri (Raymond); Susan Bannay (Joan Verniero); Ellen Maestre (Raymond); and Michele Bannay; half-brother Richard Ruggles (Shirley); seven beloved grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.
The family expresses gratitude to CT Hospice and the professionals from whom Gloria received excellent care and comfort.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, September 9th, 2025, from 4 to 7 pm at the Larson Funeral Home, 1209 Post Rd, Fairfield Center. Services will continue on Wednesday, September 10th, at 11 am at the Covenant Church of Easton. Her burial at Oak Lawn Cemetery will take place privately at a later date.
