It is with heavy hearts that we announce our beloved Mother and Nonnie, Gloria Santine-Wasmund of Clinton Township, Michigan, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2025.
Gloria was born on August 4, 1926 in Philadelphia, Pa., to Giacomo and Anna (Serpente) DiMarco, the oldest of six children.
She married Dominic Francis Santine in October of 1949 in Philadelphia. Shortly after their wedding, they moved to Puerto Rico, where Dominic was serving in the U.S. Navy. While there, they would welcome their first child together, Donna Lynn. Dominic and Gloria eventually permanently resided in Michigan and welcomed four additional children to complete their family.
Having left her Italian-American family on the east coast, Gloria managed to create bonds with a slew of friends who became like family in short order. She brought with her a love of big family get-togethers and most Sundays were spent preparing her traditional Italian meals for company.
Gloria was widowed in April of 1981 and spent many years after dividing her time between Michigan and the little island paradise her and Dominic loved in Sanibel, Fl. Later in life, Gloria met Harry Wasmund, whom she would marry in June 2004. They spent ten years together until Harry's death. His children always remained an important part of her life.
Being with her family gave her the greatest joy, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She looked forward to every christening, graduation, birthday and wedding, embracing not only new family members by marriage but their extended families as well.
Gloria loved to surround herself with others and made new friends throughout her life. It was quite common for a new neighbor or a total stranger she met at the pool in Sanibel to be invited over for lasagna.
Weeks before her death she stood in her grandson's kitchen for hours, making meatballs and telling stories. She stayed sharp to the very end, and God mercifully carried her home quickly.
She is survived by her children and their spouses Barbara Saliba (Paul), Susan Shermetaro (Dr. Charles), Robert (Mary), Michael (Grace), Clifford Wasmund (Susan), Deborah Meli (Paul), Matthew Wasmund (Angel); grandchildren Michael Saliba, Matthew Saliba (Abbigail), Charles Shermetaro, Gina Anderson (Brad), Joseph Shermetaro (Alaina), Rachel Schuth (Jack), Maria Santine, Anna Santine, Robert Santine, Anthony Santine, Jack Santine, Gabriella Santine, Ashley Sandoval, Alyssa Knupp (Jeffrey), Anthony Sandoval, Marissa Tanner (Trevor), Jessica Wasmund, Michael Wasmund, Daniel Wasmund; and great-grandchildren Dominic Saliba, Mariella Saliba, Gloria Anderson, Vincent Anderson, Joseph Shermetaro, Carlo Shermetaro, Maria Schuth, Joseph Schuth, Lucy Schuth, Adela Schuth, Dominic Schuth, Regina Schuth and Harrison Knupp. Additional survivors include her siblings Phyllis Gentile, Teresa Hurst, Jane Giove and John and Frances DiMarco.
Gloria was predeceased by her first husband Dominic Santine and second husband Harry Wasmund, daughter Donna Santine, parents Giacomo and Anna DiMarco, and sister Elizabeth Visco.
Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, March 7, 2025 at Bagnasco & Calcaterra Funeral Home, 13650 East 15 Mile Road, Sterling Heights, MI 48312. Rosary will be held at 7:00 pm.
