Gong Liang Zhu, 78, retired computer programmer, of Chicago's Ravenswood neighborhood, passed away peacefully on November 5, 2024 at St. Joseph Hospital.
Born in Shanghai, Gong Liang graduated from Jing Xi high School and was the second of five children. Gong Liang taught English at the middle school level and was a prolific reader all his life. In his younger years, he wrote magazine articles and submitted many letters-to-the-editor. In 1975 he was introduced to a young woman by her aunt. The young couple married in January, 1976 and welcomed a son later that year.
Gong Liang moved alone to the United States in 1985 to pursue his B.S. and M.S. in computer science from DePaul University. The family was reunited in Chicago in 1988 and lived in Chinatown and Lakeview before settling in Ravenswood 30 years ago. Gong Liang retired after 25 years as a Computer Programmer for Geico Insurance (formerly Banker's Life and Casualty). He was a hard-working, loyal, happy person who always thought of others first. His greatest joy was being a grandfather.
Beloved husband of 48 years to Xiao Qian Shen, devoted Father of Richard Yiyu Zhu, M.D., and very proud and loving grandfather ("Ye-Ye") of Alexander Hou Zhu (16), Nicholas "Nico" Rui Zhu (5), and Diana Yue Zhu (2). Brother of Kung Yun Chu, Kung Hua Chu, Kung Mei Chu, and Kunghui Chu, all of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Son of the late Chung Yung Chu and Hsiu Chen Tsai.
Mr. Zhu was an organ donor. The family has selected a private cremation service.
