Greg Gimblette Obituary

After two heroic years my husband lost his battle to cancer. Greg Gimblette passed away on February 17, 2025. There will be no monuments built nor parades given, but if anyone met Greg for the first time, they would always remember him as a personable, kind, unassuming and caring gentleman; always thinking of the wants and needs of others above his own.

Greg loved his Berkshires and indulged in all her beauty and offerings from water skiing, hunting, fishing, downhill skiing to driving up Mt. Greylock many times throughout the year just to take in her beauty.

In his final weeks, Greg enjoyed reminiscing his life growing up in the Berkshires and how fortunate he felt as a kid to have been a part of it. His stories always began at Egremont School with his lifelong buddy, Ray Kushi, and their Illustrious baseball careers -you would have thought they had won the World Series Trophy to hear them tell it. And of course, one cannot forget the candy raids at Jules on Elm St. That passion for confectionaries would follow him throughout his life. He always thought the best day of the year was the day after Easter when all the candy was half price! And the worst day of his young life was when his mother signed him up for ballroom dance lessons at the Wendell Hotel.

Throughout his adolescence, Greg would experience the feeling of parental independence every Thursday night on North St. when school was forgotten and girls were there to be impressed. Another passage of independence was when Greg turned sixteen and took to the roads riding his motorcycle to the Music Inn to teach water skiing. And that winter he took a Greyhound to Mont-Tremblant to take the test for his ski instructor certification. Proudly returning home to become part of the prestigious Bousquet Ski School directed by Court McDermott, who became a mentor and lifelong friend to Greg.

Greg was never much of a golfer, but decided to take turf management at UMass so others could be. That dream was interrupted by a draft notice and Greg was off to see the ocean blue for four years in the navy. He was proud to have served his country and proud to be called a veteran even when our country was at odds over the Vietnam war.

After the navy, Greg returned home with his new bride, Paula Lewis, and together they shared a life time of adventures. They were inseparable throughout their 53 years of marriage. And together they massed an impressive collection of Americana and many adventures along the way. If you couldn't find him traveling the back roads of the Berkshires or walking the fields at Brimfield searching for that next acquisition; you could always find him fly fishing at his beloved Alford Brook Club. The club will always hold a special place in Greg's heart. He loved the peace and tranquility that he found there- besides the strings of trout he caught and the many friendships he made. In-between his adventures and activities Greg found time to work the lot at Johnson Ford for his classmate, Gary Johnson. It speaks volumes of his character when he would receive Christmas gifts from his customers and tenants as Greg so often did.

Greg leaves behind a loving family and many wonderful friends. He will always have a place in their hearts and a story they can tell of this special person they called a friend. There will be a private service held and at a later date there will be a celebration of Greg's life. If you wish to make a donation, Greg was very supportive of Saint Jude Children's Hospital and the Alford Brook Club, both in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.

Dear Paula,

What a beautiful tribute to your husband, Greg. Greg was a good friend of my brother Tim, who I shared the tribute with, who lives in CA. He shared fun memories of Greg at South Jr High and how he also had a nice connection with our Mom too. As you said very well, "Godspeed".

I met Greg in 2011. At the time he served as an historical consultant for Cherry Cottage in Stockbridge and I had been hired to do post clean up after its restoration. (My partner and I became the caretakers for the property 3 yrs later). My 1st impression? I saw a man full of passion and dedication. I admired his meticulous nature and the way he would fuss over trying to help the homeowner find the correct period pieces. Although Cherry Cottage is dedicated to the Hopkins family (cira 1800's) I will always associate it with Greg. I was honored and grateful when he invited me to help give OLLI tours of Cherry Cottage. Anyone could clearly see the twinkle in his eyes as he spoke of the Cherry Cottage history and architecture. His enthusiasm was infectious! During our first year as caretakers of Cherry Hill farm, Greg would stop by often to check in on us, always giving fatherly advice to "pace ourselves". It's a tribute to just how kind and caring he truly was. When COVID hit, he was the first one at our door to make sure we were taking all the necessary precautions. Throughout the years I'd look forward to harvest time and seeing Greg get excited when I'd drop off bushels of peaches, pears, and apples. I enjoyed the walks through Paul's lovely gardens as we'd share tips on plants and flowers. I recall the day he informed us of his illness. He delivered the news with such lightheartedness so as to keep us from feeling alarmed and panicked. Again, this shows just how much Greg cared for others before himself. He showed such bravery and grace during adversity that I can only describe as inspirational. A true gentleman to the end! Although he will be sorely missed, I will always remember him with smiles and laughter. Paula, we love you! So plan on me dropping in from time to time to see how you're doing...just as Greg would want. I hope you can feel the outpouring of love from everyone. Just know you're not alone in your grief. With love and heartfelt sympathy, your friends and neighbors, Nancy & Rick.

Greg was my landlord in Stockbridge for many years before I bought my own home. Very nice guy. Before I moved, I remember he had just purchased a scooter and he was very excited about it. I hope warm memories comfort you during this difficult time.

Paula, I had only met Grag a few weeks ago, but had heard of him, from Earl, so often, and so warmly. It was easy to see what a gentleman he was, in the way he lived out his last days. His obituary was such a beautiful testimony to this, so loving, thoughtful and beautifully written. We will be thinking of both of you.

Hello again Ms. Gimblette as I last referred to you as my art teacher at North/Reid Jr. High in the late 70s. I didn't like art class, but I remember you being bubbly and very nice to all of us kids. I haven't seen you since and I haven't seen Greg since 1983 when I worked with him at Besse Clarke during my HS days. He was a really nice, funny and quirky man. He always cracked me up when he was high in energy running around to all the clothes racks in the sports department making sure all the hangers were equidistant from each other. A lot of us HS kids had a good time working there, so much so that one of my current dogs is named Besse. I hope the years were good to you and Greg and I'm sorry for your loss.
