Greg Burt, 85, of Williston passed away August 16, 2025 of natural causes.
Greg was born on October 8, 1939, in Greenfield, Massachusetts to Donald T. and Mary (Mooney) Burt. He grew up playing baseball, hunting with his father and golfing with his Uncle Mike, and graduated with honors from Greenfield High School in 1957. Dad worked in his father's automotive garage through his teens and after graduation. A young woman caught his eye one day, and soon a courtship began. He and Donna Noyes married on August 27, 1960. They moved to Keene, New Hampshire where Greg was employed by American Optical.
The desire to serve his country drove Dad's enlistment in the US Navy in 1963. He graduated from the Great Lakes (Illinois) Naval training school and was based in Virginia Beach, Virginia and Charleston, South Carolina. Dad served as an electrician's mate aboard the nuclear submarine USS Alexander Hamilton, stationed in Spain and Scotland, until his honorable discharge in March 1968. Their eldest son Steve was born during this time.
After his discharge from the Navy, the young family moved to Vermont, where Dad found employment with IBM in Essex Junction. Their younger son Scott was born during this time, in South Burlington. The family moved to Maine in 1972 where Dad was employed by Scott Paper (now SAPPI) in Somerset, Maine as a technology worker. He worked there for over 30 years until his retirement in 2004. Shortly after retirement they moved to Vermont to be closer to their young grandchildren.
Those who got to know Dad enjoyed a relationship full of interesting discussions and lots of dry humor. There was nothing Dad wouldn't try to troubleshoot and fix, usually successfully. Visits with Dad meant that there would be a golf tournament or Red Sox game in the background. He loved baseball and would watch reruns of Red Sox games just to remind himself of key moments. He coached both of his son's baseball teams in their younger years. He proudly led the Central Maine Kiwanis Babe Ruth team to four city championships in six years, and coached All Star teams to deep playoff runs with both of his sons. He was a lifelong softball player, anchoring the hot corner at third base for various church softball teams well into his 50's.
Dad was an avid deer hunter and waterfowl hunter, enjoying decades of scouting, watching and harvesting wildlife in the woods. He was highly skilled in reloading and created custom rounds for shooting and hunting. Golf was also a passion. He built custom clubs for himself, his sons and grandsons. A somewhat surprising talent of Dad's was singing. He sang for many years in church choirs and quartets and really came to life with a microphone in hand.
He is survived by his wife of almost 65 years, Donna Burt, of Williston; his two sons Steve and Scott Burt, of Waitsfield and Jericho, respectively; two loving daughters in law, Lisa and Stacie, and 3 wonderful grandsons, Greg, Aidan and Alex. He was very proud and supportive of his family.
He will be greatly missed, and he will live on in the countless memories and stories we will continue to share.
Dad's wishes were that no service be held. The family will hold a gathering when we can all be together to remember him and celebrate his life and legacy.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the Humane Society of Chittenden County, in honor of his love of his cats, and all animals: http://hsccvt.org/donate
