Gregory Michael (Greg) Volkay, was born in Carbondale, PA on February 8, 1928, son of the late Rev. Theodosius Volkay and Elvira (Boruch) Volkay. He graduated from Minersville High School and attended St. Procopius College. Greg served in the US Army with the Airborne as their mess sergeant. He worked in his family’s butcher shop, Boruch’s Market, and had a catering business, Party Time Caterers. He later worked for the Acme and as a manager of Erlich Pest Control in Pottsville. He retired as the Minersville Borough Manager.
Greg was a devoted husband to Yolanda and father to Christine (John Hilditch), and Opi to his grandchildren, Dr. Gregory Hilditch (Sarah Zinn, Esq.), and Sarah Witherow (Lt. Wayne Witherow). He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and was a 4th degree knight. He was also a member of the Catholic War Veterans, and the Minersville Library Board, and served as chair of the board for a number of years. Greg was also a member of the Byzantine Choir and when he moved to Broomall, he joined the St. Pius X Church Choir.
Greg was predeceased by his wife Yolanda (D’Allesandro), sister Ethel, and brother, Theo. He was a good friend to all and always available to help family and friends.
Family and friends are invited to his Viewing, Friday, May 2, 2025, 10:00 to 11:00 AM at St. Pius X Church, 220 Lawrence Road, Broomall, PA followed by his Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM. Interment thereafter at 3:00 PM at Charles Baber Garden Cemetery, 200 S. 2nd Street, Pottsville, PA 17901.
