It is with heartfelt sadness to announce the passing of retired Lieutenant Gregory S. Long (Badge 55). He left the world September 11, 2025, in the arms of his companion, Christine Ferragamo, who he made his home with in Johnston, RI.

He leaves behind his granddaughter, Lilliana Rose Lucas and his stepchildren, Nicholas M., and Noelle Ferragamo. His son Thomas J. Long predeceased him November 5th of 2024. He was the son of the late Thomas and Mildred Studley Long; Brother of the late Thomas and Brad Long. He also leaves behind his former wife Peggy McGraw Long.

Greg graduated from LaSalle Academy in 1976, and graduated from Roger Williams University in 1987 with a degree in Criminal Justice. He continued with his education and received a master's degree in Criminal Justice from Anna Maria College in 1993.

He was a friend to all and a brother to so many of the Rhode Island State Police. Greg conquered his lifelong dream and achievement by joining the ranks of the Rhode Island State Police in 1980. Greg served all the barracks, including the detective division and received numerous commendations and citations throughout his distinguished 23 years with the RI State Police. Greg personified what it was to be a RI State Trooper. His demeanor and personality were one of professionalism mixed with kindness and a blend of common sense. He approached every assignment with the same grit, determination, and sense of justice long synonymous with that of the RI State Police.

He retired in 2002 and later became a Supervisor of Security at Providence College where he was well respected by faculty and students.

His loyalty to his career, family and friends was beyond reproach, and he always lived by the motto "Loyalty above all else".

A Memorial Mass to which relatives and friends are invited will be held Friday September 19th at 10am in St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Smithfield, RI. Burial will be private.
