Gregory Mangan Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Schmidt Funeral Home - West Bend on Jun. 15, 2024.
Gregory Scott Mangan, age 72, passed away on June 9, 2024, at home surrounded by his family after a long battle with congestive heart failure. Greg was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on May 20th, 1952, to David and Angela (nee Knoernschild) Mangan.
He attended Christ King Grade School and Marquette University High School with the Class of 1970. He went on to graduate from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a degree in Zoology in 1974. After graduation, his multi-faceted talents allowed him to work in several fields to note, such as Blue Cross Health Insurance, and as a Captain of the Wisconsin Industrial Police. He also worked as a free-lance film cameraman, a commercial artist, and finally, a sales representative for a clutch company in Milwaukee, WI for 23 years.
During these years, he performed many self-made achievements such as building his own canoe, setting adventures into the wilderness of Yellowstone National Park and the Rockies of Colorado, visiting Egypt and climbing the Great Pyramid in the Fall of 1982, and his ingenious invention and marketing of a fitness course called Visualized Resistance Training (VRT), a method of building muscle without the use of weights; which has sold many copies and received positive testimonials from his customers.
But his life really began when he met and married the love of his life, Nancy Olson, with whom he had spent his last thirty years and had two children with. He met Nancy at a family reunion through her brother Allan Olson on June 12th, 1993, and their love for each other was so divine that they got married on July 2nd, 1994 (The 39th Wedding Anniversary of Nancy's Parents).
Greg had a powerful Faith in God, and he liked to make annual retreats at the Jesuit Retreat House in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Greg loved to pray the Holy Rosary with his wife and children. He had tremendous love for Jesus and the Blessed Virgin Mary. During his leisure, Greg loved to draw and paint, watch his favorite game show "Jeopardy" with his family, go canoeing on several different lakes in Wisconsin, spending time with his family at Pike Lake, going out with his friends on adventures, watching many movies and historical documentaries, traveling abroad, listening to his favorite musicians from the 60s and 70s, reading lots of books and history books, reading psalms from the bible and spending quiet times in prayer.
Greg is preceded in death by his father, David Jordan Mangan, his mother, Angela Amalia Mangan (nee Knoernschild), his brothers David Jordan Mangan Jr. (Marilyn) and James William Mangan (Margaret), and Father-in-Law William Allan Olson Sr., sisters in law Catherine Grace Waldron (Steven) and Mary Karen Wondrash (Jeffrey).
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Carolyn, children, Gregory Mangan and Patrick Mangan, brother, Richard William Mangan (Margaret), sister, Ellen Marie Turzynski (Joseph), Mother-in-Law Nancy Olson (nee Bumgardner), Brothers-in-Law, William Allan Olson Jr., Lawrence Joseph Olson, Richard Eric Olson, and Robert Thomas Olson, and many nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday, June 19th, at St. Francis Cabrini Church in West Bend, WI, with Visitation at 11:00 AM, followed by Mass at 1:30 PM. Burial will take place at Holy Angels Cemetery at 3:00 PM. Reception after burial will be at a later date. The Mangan Family wishes to express their sincere thanks and appreciation to the Jackson Police Department, the First Responders Unit, and Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin Hospitals.

Greg and I shared many coming-of-age adventures. I was pleased we reconnected in recent years and slipped in a few more.

I only knew Greg through his VET course. Thanks so much for that Greg! From what I have read here, Greg made the world a better place in many other ways as well. Rest in peace Greg!
