Gregory McDermott Obituary

Published by Legacy on Aug. 7, 2024.
Gregory M. McDermott age 73, passed away on Friday, August 2, in Long Lake, NY.
Greg was born July 24, 1951, to Margaret and Edward McDermott. Greg was raised in the Bronx, NY alongside his siblings, Mary, Patricia, Eileen, Edward, and Cecelia.
Greg is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Peggy (Hackett) McDermott. They were married at the College of Mount St. Vincent and raised four beautiful children - Diane, Gregory, Megan, and Kelly. Greg and Peggy welcomed daughter-in-law Allison and sons-in-law; Ty and Brian, into their family. One of Greg's greatest joys, aside from being a husband, father, brother, brother-in-law and uncle, was being "Grandpa/Pa" to his seven cherished grandchildren: Kevin, Hallie, William, Ryan, Annie, John, and Sean.
Greg loved spending time with his family and had a passion for the outdoors. When he wasn't hiking or kayaking to find the next great camping spot in the Adirondacks, he could often be found in his workshop perfecting his woodworking skills. Greg will truly be missed by his family, friends, and neighbors, all of whom benefited from being a treasured part of his life.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Greg's memory to the American Cancer Society. American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741.

Robert Lavelle

August 13, 2024

I hiked with Greg in the Catskills late 60s/early 70s. I loved his can do attitude and sense of humor. We lost contact around 1974 but reconnected in 2023. We spent a beautiful 2 hours catching up in person at Kensico Dam Park and I am so happy to have had that time. I will always have very fond memories of those early hikes. God Bless you and keep you, my friend. Bob Lavelle, moved to Texas July 2024, lived in The Bronx when we hiked.
