Gregory (Greg) Charles Smithson, age 54, passed away at his mother's home under the care of Henry Ford Jackson Hospice. Greg was born September 8, 1970 and raised in Jackson, Michigan.

Greg loved playing baseball as a student in the Northwest School District. He was a left-handed pitcher with a wicked fastball and also a left-handed batter leading to many home runs. When his arm needed a rest, Greg covered first base.

Greg was a dedicated and hard-working meat cutter for 30+ years, following in his father's footsteps as a butcher. Over his long career, Greg worked for Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Kroger and Prime Cuts. He took great pride in a beautifully laid out meat case. Greg loved watching sports, but his passion was fishing. Life was a little more bearable when dropping a line in the Horton Mill Pond.

He is survived by his daughters, Kayla (Morgan) Kane, and Brooke Smithson; 2 grandchildren; mother and stepfather, Sandy (Tom) Powell; father and stepmother, Greg (Rhonda) Smithson, Sr.; sister, Shelly (Jim) Snyder; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Henry Ford Jackson Hospice, who provided compassionate care and comfort as Greg's battle with cancer came to a peaceful end.

"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

Cremation has taken place. There will be a memorial gathering of family and friends in the Fall.
