GREGORY JAMES SMOYER

8/21/47 - 12/5/25

Gregg Smoyer, formerly of Albion, MI and later Maysville, MO, passed away peacefully on December 5, 2025, at the Cameron Veterans Home in Cameron, MO. He was born and raised in Jackson, MI. He proudly served his country in the Navy aboard the USS Guadalcanal and USS Lyman K. Swenson DD729. He was very active in the USS Lyman K. Swenson DD729 Sailors Association serving in the capacity of Webmaster and Ship Historian. He began his career with the Michigan Department of Corrections in October 1977. He retired after over 31 years of dedicated service from the G. Robert Cotton Correctional Facility in February 2009.

He is survived by his wife Daisy, his son, Hillary Paul (Jen) and granddaughter Delia, stepdaughters, Cher, Chandra, and Amy. He is also survived by 7 step-grandchildren and 2 step great-grandchildren. He is survived by his brother, Randy (Carolyn) Smoyer and nieces, Jessica and Stephanie, as well as a host of cousins. He is also survived by his extended family Jonathon, Tiffany, Wyatt, Westen and Willow Wolf.

He was predeceased by his parents Vaughn and Welma Jane Smoyer, his wife JoAnn, and niece Jennifer.

Gregg will be missed by all of those who knew him from his time in the Navy, working in corrections, having a cold drink at Duffy's or Fergs, at the Swenson Sailors Reunions and the Cameron Veterans Home. Gregg "Tunes" also enjoyed retirement riding his motorcycle with many motorcycle clubs.

He will be laid to rest at Missouri Veterans Cemetery at Higginsville, MO on Monday, December 15, 2025 at 12:00 pm with military honors. Services in Michigan will take place in the Spring 2026. Information will be available closer to the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Missouri Veterans Assistance League.
