Obituary published on Legacy.com by Gorman Funeral Homes - Converse Chapel - Douglas on Feb. 7, 2025.
Gregory Alan Stinson died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, February 5th, 2025, after a long, courageous battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. He was 78.
Greg was born on Saturday, July 20th, 1946, 1946, in McCook, Nebraska to Kenneth Floyd and Virginia Marie (Baumbach) Stinson. He grew up a few miles down the road on the family farm in Palisade. In 1964, he graduated from Palisade High School and moved to Chadron, Nebraska to attend college. During his time at Chadron, he met a rancher's daughter from
Douglas, Wyoming and fell in love. Greg and Carolyn Ann Rogers)were married on December 22, 1968. Shortly after graduating college, Greg was drafted into the United States Air Force. He was stationed in Panama City, Florida, and spent some of that time in Goose Bay, Labrador. Greg and Carolyn had many wonderful memories of their time in Florida, and he would talk about them often.
In 1973, Greg and Carolyn were called home to help run the family ranch in Douglas where he would spend the rest of his working years. Together they raised two daughters, Myriah Marie and Natalee Ann. Greg dedicated his life to the ranch, embodying the values of hard work, resilience, and integrity that define the true spirit of the West. From sunup to sundown, he could be found tending to the cattle, fixing fences, and working the land with a quiet determination that spoke louder than words. Through harsh winters and scorching summers, he never wavered, taking pride in the legacy he built with his own two hands.
In 2011, they sold the family ranch and moved to Spearfish, South Dakota. They spent the winter months in Indio, California and Mesquite, Nevada. Greg loved retirement and spent his time playing golf, traveling, and making memories with his grandchildren.
Greg was a loving husband, father, and "Poppy." He loved his two girls and spent many hours taking them around the ranch in his old blue pick-up to check windmills, irrigate, or look in on the cattle. It was always a special treat to see that old blue truck at the bus stop after school where he would pick them up and take them for a Grandma's Cookie and a chocolate milk.
Greg always put others before himself. His wisdom, steady presence, and strong but gentle hands shaped those around him, leaving behind lessons that will carry on for generations. He believed in honesty, hard work, and finishing the job, even when things were hard. Greg was a proud American and loved his country. He could always be found reading a history book; especially if it had to do with George Custer. He was a loyal and sometimes frustrated lifelong Nebraska Cornhusker fan.
Greg will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was a true gentleman and was respected by many. His legacy will live on in the wide-open western skies, the rolling pastures, and the heart of all who had the privilege of knowing him, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren, whom he loved dearly.
Greg is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Carolyn of
Douglas, Wyoming; his daughter Natalee (Nick) Brace of
Douglas, Wyoming; grandchildren Eliza Ortiz of
Douglas, Wyoming, Gregory Pinell of Woodland Park, Colorado, and Madeleine Brace of
Douglas, Wyoming; great grandchildren Layne and Zayden Hawkins of
