Gregory E. Turnbaugh, age 74, of Mount Carroll, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born on September 20, 1950, in Morrison, IL, Greg was the son of Elwyn and Virginia (Miller) Turnbaugh. He was raised on the family farm in rural Mount Carroll and graduated from Mount Carroll High School in 1968. Greg, who always had a deep connection to the land, returned to the family farm after graduation and continued farming alongside his parents, dedicating his life to this vocation.
On June 29, 1974, Greg married Shirley Pfundstein at the First Lutheran Church of Chadwick. Their marriage was blessed with four children, whom Greg cherished deeply. He and Shirley worked together to instill in their children a strong work ethic, a love for family, and a deep respect for the land and faith. Greg's passion for farming was matched only by his unshakable faith in God.
Greg and Shirley, along with their children, worked the family farm for decades, where Greg never once felt like he was "working." He found joy in tending to his livestock and crops, using his beloved John Deere equipment. Despite his busy days, he always found time to connect with friends, sharing stories, farming wisdom, and a good joke or two. Greg was also a dedicated member of his church and served as a trustee for the Township of Woodland.
Known for his remarkable ability to fix almost anything, Greg's warmth, sense of humor, and love for his family will be remembered by all who knew him. His family will forever treasure the memories of Greg attending every family event, taking pride in his role as a parent and grandparent, and deeply enjoying every moment spent with his loved ones.
Greg is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley; his four children, Codee (Lyle) Miller of Lanark, Tammy (Jason) King of Darlington, WI, Holly Turnbaugh of Aurora, CO, and Jared (Shelley) Turnbaugh of Mount Carroll; his grandchildren, Austin and Alyssa Miller, Madyson, Landon, and Lillian King, and Charley and Miles Turnbaugh; his special grand-dog, Raven; and his sister, Mary Ann Turnbaugh. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elwyn and Virginia Turnbaugh.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at FHN Hospice, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and Midwest Medical Center for their care and compassion during Greg's final months.
A visitation will be held at Law-Jones Funeral Home in Mount Carroll, IL, on Friday, January 3, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. A private funeral service will be held at a later date.
