Gretchen M. Currera, age 50, passed away peacefully at Lahey Hospital on Sunday, October 26, 2025.
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana on December 14, 1974, she was the beloved daughter of the late Janet (Graves) Williams and Jake Currera (FL). Gretchen was raised in Winchester, and graduated from Reading High School with the class of 1996. During her high school years, she loved being a hockey cheerleader and cherished the many friendships she made along the way.
For the last 20 years Gretchen lived her very best life in her group home in Woburn with her adopted family. Gretchen loved attending her day program, staying in a hotel at the beach, bowling, swimming and of course going to the drop in center where she met her boyfriend, Stevie. On holidays she often travelled to share the day with Pam and Lisa and her extended family.
Gretchen was active in the Special Olympics and local community activities that brought her endless excitement and joy. She had an incredible zest for life and found joy in the simple pleasures - singing, dancing, and sharing her infectious laughter with those around her. Gretchen loved 'her lake', Lake Champlain, where she spent hours swimming, watching sunsets and walking up and down the line visiting her family. She loved to dress up, getting her nails done, and adding a bit of sparkle with her favorite jewelry and "bling." She could often be found happily browsing the aisles of Target or CVS, always finding something to smile about.
Gretchen's joyful, sassy, and outgoing personality lit up every room she entered. She loved deeply - people, celebrations, and love itself. Weddings were among her favorite occasions, and her warm, compassionate heart touched everyone who knew her. Her happiest moments were spent surrounded by her housemates and staff at her home, or dancing with her boyfriend Stevie, or listening - for the hundredth time - to "I Will Always Love You".
Gretchen will be remembered for her laughter, kindness, and the light she brought into so many lives. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who were blessed to know her.
Surviving Gretchen is her father, Jake Currera of FL; her foster brother Ray Bin and his wife Tha, her adoring cousins and guardians, Pamela Gray of Haverhill, Lisa Gray Duffy and her husband Jim of Salem, MA; her loving uncle, Garrett Graves, Jr. and his wife Roxanne of Concord, NH; her dear friends and housemates, Jillian, Erin, Gail, and Debbie, as well as many other dear cousins, relatives and devoted friends.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her visiting hours on Thursday October 30th from 11:30am to 12:30pm at the Edward V. Sullivan Funeral Home, 43 Winn St., Burlington. Her funeral service will follow in the funeral home at 12:30pm. Burial will be private and at the convenience of her family. condolences to her family may be made at www.sullivanfuneralhome.net
