Gussie Young Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Byrum Funeral Home Inc. on Dec. 11, 2025.
Gussie Marie Young was born October 19, 1947 in Florala, Alabama and passed from this life on December 5, 2025 in Athens, Texas.

Gussie had many loves. She loved morning coffee, a little evening wine, fishing, music, cooking, and gardening. She was often known as the "fish whisperer" as she appeared to know when and where to drop a hook! Music, though, is what moved her. She had such a beautiful voice and could be heard walking around singing and humming her tunes. This often happened while she was in her kitchen cooking her undeniably amazing food. She loved cooking, but when she wasn't in the kitchen, she spent countless hours in her garden. Her green thumb never seemed to allow her to lose a plant as she nurtured them just as she did her children who were her greatest loves!

Gussie also had a huge heart and a giving spirit, but her kindness was never to be mistaken for weakness. Dynamite comes in small packages, and she was a little piece of it! If she or ones she loved were ever crossed, the cut from her expression and words could be felt with a big punch! Gussie loved BIG and created a huge legacy through her family who all carry that same energy and spirit. She was the matriarch to five generations on earth and is now a heavenly angel to them all. Gussie's motto was "loved you first," and she lived her life 100% HER WAY!

She was preceded in death by her husband, David W. Young; her great-grandson, Jakob Hunter; her sister, Mary S. Tucker; her nephews, Kelly Whitt and Billy Glennis; her parents Constantine and Mavis Glennis; and her grandparents, W.B. and Lily Steele.

Gussie is survived by her daughters, Teri Waters and husband Andy, Shellie Steele, and Cindy Morgan; her sons, Rodney Washington and wife Christie, David Washington Jr. and Rhisha; her step-son, Frank Young; her step-daughter, Debbie Mann and husband Brian; her grandchildren, Chris, Courtni, Brandon, Stevie, Amanda, Cassandra, Crystal, Lindsi, Heather, Jesyka, Hayden, Dawson, Tyler, and Blaine; her 24 great-grandchildren; her great-great-granddaughter, Remi Rose; her brother, C.V. Glennis Jr. and wife Sue; her nieces, Lori, Valerie, Wanda, and Frankie; and her nephew, Todd.

A celebration of Gussie's life will be at 1:00pm on Monday, December 15, 2025 at Byrum Funeral Home Chapel.
