Gustaaf Van Steen passed away peacefully on Friday, March 13, 2026 at the age of 68 surrounded by the love of his family.

A proud veteran of the United States Air Force, Gustaaf earned numerous awards in recognition of his distinguished service to his country.

He was born on May 15, 1957, in Indonesia to Jan and Johanna DeJong Van Steen. On Thanksgiving Day in 1960, he immigrated to the United States with his parents and two brothers, initially settling in New York. At the age of 19, he enlisted in the Air Force, beginning a life of service and dedication as a jet engine master and Eagle Keeper. In recent years, he made his home in Kentucky, where he lived with his son Gus and his family.

In addition to his parents, Gustaaf was preceded in death by his brother, Ferdinand Van Steen.

He is survived by his sons: Gus and his wife, Katie; Tom and his wife, Marisa; and son Craig. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Trinity, Heaven, Tom Jr., Rue, and Richie; his siblings, Paul and Astrid Van Steen; and his beloved dog and constant companion, "Sweetie."

Gus will be remembered as a kindhearted, genuine, and charismatic man with a quick wit and a warm spirit. He loved music, boating, camping, his animals, and in recent years, enjoyed growing hot peppers and crafting his signature hot sauces. He was loved by all who knew him, and his presence brought light and laughter to those around him. That light will be deeply missed.

A celebration of life will be held for the family at a later date in New York. Memorial contributions may be made in Gustaaf's honor to the Kentucky Humane Society.
