The Honorable Guy James Mangano, a distinguished figure in the legal community, passed away on June 20, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on January 14, 1930, at St. Peter's Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, Justice Mangano was a long-time Brooklyn resident until he moved to East Atlantic Beach in the early 70s after spending his childhood summers there. While there, he met, fell in love, and married a Long Beach gal, his adored and feisty wife, Anne T. DeMarco. He was a dedicated judge, instructor, and cherished family member whose contributions to the field of law and his community will leave a lasting legacy.
Justice Mangano started his 45 years of public service in 1955 when he served as an investigator and assistant counsel for the Joint Legislative Committee until 1958. He then served on the New York State Assembly for Kings County from 1958 until 1962, and the State Senate for Kings County from 1962 until 1965.
Justice Mangano embarked on his judicial career in 1965 when he was appointed to the New York City Family Court, a role he held until 1968. His commitment to justice was further demonstrated when he successfully won election to the Supreme Court for the Second Judicial District in 1969, with subsequent reelections occurring in 1982 and 1997. Between 1976 and 1978, he served as the Administrative Judge of the Criminal Term of the Kings County Supreme Court, before transitioning to the Appellate Term for the Second and Eleventh Judicial Districts. In a testament to his knowledge and leadership, he was appointed to the Appellate Division, Second Department on January 22, 1979. His significant contributions to the judiciary culminated in his designation as Presiding Justice of the Second Department by Governor Mario M. Cuomo on March 20, 1990, a role in which he was re-designated by Governor George Pataki on December 30, 1996. Justice Mangano retired from the bench in 2001, later joining the New York office of JAMS Arbitration, Mediation and ADR Services. He also imparted his wisdom and experience as an adjunct professor of law at St. John's University School of Law from 1990 until 1996.
An alumnus of St. John's University School of Law, he graduated in 1955 and was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Law degree in 1983. His love for his alma mater led him to endow a scholarship for Alternative Resolution and Mediation, supported by an annual Golf Outing.
Justice Mangano was known for his kind and caring demeanor. A man of integrity with a strong moral compass, he was also fearlessly loyal and protective of his family. His welcoming spirit made him a consummate host, who took joy in entertaining friends and family. He was easygoing, with a big and bold personality marked by playful humor and quick wit. After the passing of his beloved wife Anne, he found joy in cooking, becoming an accomplished and creative chef who enjoyed exchanging recipes with his son, Guy. He also took great joy in tending to his beautiful home and garden, where he was always engaged in one project or another.
He was the oldest member of the Rockville Links Golf Club, where he enjoyed playing golf and engaging in card games with friends. Guy J. Mangano was also an avid sports fan, holding a special place in his heart for the New York Jets and a passion for old school college basketball. In addition, he was an accomplished ballroom dancer, showcasing his skillful moves and natural agility. Guy was a man of faith as an active parishioner at St. Ignatius Martyr Church, also known as Long Beach Catholic, in Long Beach, NY.
Justice Mangano is survived by his sons, James Vincent Mangano II and his partner, Cindy Voehl, and The Honorable Guy James Mangano Jr. and his wife, Maria T. Fasulo. He leaves behind loving nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins, and a dear friend, Doris French and Pat Pope (his 3rd son). He is predeceased by his wife, the late Anne T. Mangano, as well as his parents, the late James Vincent Mangano and the late Rose (neé: Mancaruso) Mangano.
A visitation will be held at the Christopher T. Jordan Funeral Home located at 302 Long Beach Road, Island Park, NY 11558, on June 29, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Justice Guy J. Mangano will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his generous spirit and dedication to family and friendship. His legacy of integrity and compassion will continue to inspire those who had the honor of knowing him.
