Gwen Hitt Cook, age 83, widow of David Phillip Cook, passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 4, 2025, at her home.
Gwen was born on November 16, 1942, in Laurens, South Carolina and was the daughter of the late Ernest Hitt and Juanita “Nita” Price Hitt.
She was a 1961 graduate of Clinton High School and continued her education earning a bachelor's degree in 1965 from Erskine College. Gwen retired from teaching in Laurens County School District #56 after 34 years of service and was a member of the ADK teacher’s sorority. She was a former longtime member of Providence ARP Church in Clinton where she taught Sunday School, served as a Youth Leader organizing the annual VBS program along with the children’s Easter Egg Hunt and Fall Festival, and served in various leadership roles in Women’s Ministries including President and Secretary. She was a current member of Ora ARP Church of Laurens. Gwen’s “favorite hobby” was her family…caring and cooking for them.
Gwen is survived by her son, Phillip Cook of Clinton; her daughters, Kim Jenkins (Jeff) of Clinton, Lynn Wilkie (Jeff) of Clinton; her grandchildren all of Clinton, Rebekah Wells (Wesley), David Wilkie, Madelyn Wilkie, Catherine Wilkie; her two great-grandchildren, Christopher Wells and Madison Wells; and her brother-in-law, Robin Smith.
In addition to her husband of 23 years, Gwen is preceded in death by her brother-in-law, Virgil Cook.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, at 3:00 PM in the Gray Funeral Home Chapel of Clinton with Rev. Watson Gunderson officiating. Burial will follow at Pinelawn Memory Gardens.
The family will greet friends on Friday, December 5, 2025, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at Gray Funeral Home of Clinton.
In lieu of flowers, please honor Gwen with donations to Bonclarken Conference Center, 500 Pine Drive, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
