Willis Hamlin Jr., affectionately known as "Ham," passed away peacefully on July 30, 2025, at the age of 86. He was born on January 5, 1939, in Martinsville, Virginia. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Ham leaves behind a legacy woven with integrity, service, and unwavering love for his family.

Ham began his remarkable career in the United States Air Force in January 1958, dedicating over two decades of his life to serving his country with honor and pride. He retired as a Master Sergeant (MSGT) in August 1981, having showcased exceptional discipline and leadership throughout his military journey. His commitment to his nation was a testament to his strong sense of patriotism, values that he carried into all aspects of his life.

Following his military retirement, Ham continued to embody the spirit of public service. He worked for Sting Security for two years before finding his dedicated place at the Smithsonian Institution, where he served for an impressive 23 years. His tenure there was underscored by the same integrity and devotion that had characterized his military career, leaving a lasting impact on those he worked alongside and the institutions he protected.

In his retirement years, Ham cherished the comforts of home. He delighted in watching his favorite Marvel movies and TV series, as well as classic westerns, and indulged in daily episodes of The Young and the Restless. Known for his gentle spirit and quiet strength, Ham brought warmth and humor to conversations, particularly those centered on military life, politics, and sports. His thoughtful insights and lively spirit made him a cherished companion during family gatherings, where his presence was always a source of joy.

Ham is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Marie Hamlin; his daughter, Denise Roach; his grandson, Demarais (Brianna) Roach; and his great-grandchildren, Branigan, Davis, Declan, and Bronwyn. He is also survived by Diane Davis, his daughter at heart, whose love and devotion were a constant source of joy in his life. His siblings, Leon (Danielle) Hamlin and Elizabeth Millner, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members, also carry forward his memory.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Willis Sr. and Creola Hamlin, and his siblings, Edward Hamlin and Patsy Webb.

Ham's life was rich and full, marked by service to his country, a deep love for his family, and the joys of simple pleasures. His legacy of strength, kindness, and humor will endure in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

A brief military service with honors will be held at the Columbarium of Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, Maryland. The date will be announced once finalized.
