Harold Beam Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Thomas J. Shea Funeral Home, Inc. on Feb. 17, 2024.
Harold (Bud) G. Beam Jr. passed away into the presence of our Lord on February 14, 2024 Valentine's Day at the age of 94, joining once again with his eternal Valentine wife Norma. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather he was the definition of a Dad and provider. (family man). Dad adored his wife, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He lived life to the fullest. Dad never had a bad word about anyone and was admired and respected by those who knew him. He is predeceased by his precious wife of 69 years Norma, his parents Harold and Theresa, brothers Dick, Don, sisters Beverly, Gloria and Betty all known as the "Speed Skating Beams" of which Dad was the last surviving member. He is survived by his sisters-in- law Jeanette Pritchard and MaryAnn Beam, children Jeffrey (Faye) Beam, Valerie (Gary) Cook, Patricia (Terry) Roma, Gregory (Kathy) Beam, Jennifer (Alex) McLaughlin, 15 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. He took a sincere interest in each and every one. Dad loved people and when he met someone he wanted to know EVERYTHING about them. He had a tremendous group of Wednesday lunch and Poker buddies Mike Grenis, Don Zelter, Richard Mattie's, Marc Ferro, Gerry Hubal and Joel Thirer which we understand was quite the competitive group. He loved BU basketball and attended the games with his dear friend Bernie Becker. We can't leave out his wonderful neighbors Spero and Mariliz Pines who always checked in on him and his table mates at Elderwood Assisted living Don and Sophie where dad was proclaimed "The Mayor". He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. Dad had an amazing career, 30 years at IBM where he held numerous executive positions including Site Controller. Upon retirement he co-founded Southern Tier Medivan which he ran for 10 years. He was a selfless volunteer serving as Chairman of The Board at Wilson Hospital where he was instrumental in the merger which today is known as UHS. He was awarded The Silver Beaver award for his volunteer work with the Boy Scouts of America, served many positions with the Binghamton Rotary including President and served as Treasurer at Saint Vincent de Paul Blessed Sacrament Church. Additionally, he served on many boards which are too long to list. There are forever cherished memories of great times at Forest Lake where dads favorite time was early evening cocktails on the deck. Unforgettable summer vacations at Oquaga Lake, crazy family parties and Sunday family meals. Needless to say, he was a caring father and a great provider in every sense of the word. He leaves a legacy of unconditional love and is in his new home in heaven reunited with Mom, family and friends. Many thanks to the amazing care and friendships he had at Elderwood Assisted Living.
The family will receive friends from 10:30am to 12Noon on Thursday, February 22, 2024 at St. Vincent de Paul Blessed Sacrament Church. A Funeral Mass will follow at Noon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mercy House or Local charity of one's choice.

To say knowing Bud was a blessing is an understatement. Friendship comes at different times in our lives. My friendship with Bud came about as we both were involved with the Senior Living Center at Ideal and entity of UHS. He had the role of finance and audit chair and I served as board chair. I´m not sure who at times was leading the charge. When Bud had something to say he just would say it even if we were discussing something else. He was a keen business man, a caring man. Often we stay behind and talked. He loved asking questions in attempting to get to know you better. He always talked about his wife with such admiration and deep love. Family was certainly number one with him..

He had a great love for UHS his dedication spanned over 50 years. He was such a great mentor to me personally as I learned so much from him. I will miss our times taking about Ideal but more importantly I will miss our talks about life, its meaning and our families. We would talk on the phone when he was at Elderwood and he shared with me that the called him "The Mayor" and I replied that fits you Bud. I´m sure he touched a lot of lives by the telling of his stories and his zest for life.

I will miss you Bud Beam. .

I met Bud only within the past year or so while visiting my mom at Elderwood. I was amazed to hear about his incredible life and career. He was always kind and pleasant to talk to, even taking time to talk to my son about school, etc. My best to your family, Bud... you will be missed.
