Beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Veteran, and Friend

It is with deep sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Richard (Harold) Benson, who left this world peacefully at the age of 81 on Saturday September 27, 2025, surrounded by the family he so dearly loved.

Born on August 29, 1944, Richard lived a full and impactful life rooted in faith, family, and service. As a member of the Methodist Church, Richard lived out his beliefs guided by the Methodist principles along with a deep commitment to family, education, and service. He was the beloved husband of Frances Benson, his partner in life and love for over 55 years, with whom he shared decades of memories, laughter, and devotion.

Richard was the proud father of six children: Sheryl Renee Benson, Marcus Benson, Kenneth Benson, Monica Benson, Ronica Lawrence and Jennifer Gaines. To his children and grandchildren, he was more than a father-he was a teacher, a protector, and a guiding light. Richard's legacy lives on through his grandchildren: Jacqueline Lawrence, Janara Lawrence, Anthony Chaney, Arianna Gaines, and Amari Gaines, and his great-grandchildren: Daylan Sanford and Marcus Sanford. Each of them carries forward the values of strength, education, and love that Richard instilled in them.

He is also survived by his beloved sister, Jeanette Benson and was preceded in death by his cherished sister, Elizabeth Washington and beloved son, Marcus Benson. Their memories remain etched in the hearts of all who loved them.

Richard proudly served his country in the United States Army for three years, a time that deepened his sense of duty and honor. That same spirit would remain with him throughout his life-as a family man, a friend, and a respected member of his community.

As a man of intellect, ambition, and hard work, Richard earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and later pursued legal studies at St. Mary's University. He spent over 20 years working for the United States Postal Service, where he was known for his dedication, work ethic, and quiet leadership before retiring. His thirst for knowledge was lifelong and contagious. He was a strong and vocal advocate for education, often taking the time to speak with neighborhood kids about its value, always encouraging them to strive for more and to believe in the power of learning.

Beyond his professional and academic achievements, Richard had a love for life's simple pleasures. He was an avid outdoorsman who found joy in fishing and hunting, and his passion for barbecuing became legendary. Known for having "the best BBQ," Richard brought people together through food, laughter, and stories-his grill a place of both comfort and celebration.

He leaves behind not only his immediate family but also a host of extended family members, and countless friends who were touched by his warmth, humor, and wisdom.

A Memorial Service to honor Richard's life will be held on October 10 th at Lewis Funeral Home, 811 S. WW White Rd. with visitation from 10:00am to 11:00am. Following service, the burial will follow at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery located on 1520 Harry Wurzbach, San Antonio, TX 78209, at 1:45pm.

Though Richard Benson may no longer walk beside us, the example he set, the lessons he taught, and the love he gave will remain with us always.

Rest well, Dad. Your life was a blessing, and your legacy lives on in all of us.
