Mr. Harold (Hal) Bittleman Jr. of Charlotte, NC passed peacefully on Tuesday, August 2, 2022 at Brookdale Charlotte East Assisted Living.
Hal was born in Manhattan, NY on May 2, 1924 and was the first born son of the late Harold and Clara Bittleman (nee Hamborsky). While living in Brooklyn NY Harold was drafted by the U. S. Army the at the age of 19 in 1943. He served in the Army Air Corp with the 574th Signal Aircraft Warning Battalion during WWII from 1943 to 1946 in the Pacific Theatre.
After WWII Hal moved to Lindenhurst Long Island, NY and was a member of VFW Post #2718 in Franklin Square NY.
While living in Long Island Hal was employed by Continental Vending Machine Corporation as a Production Manager. He met the love of his life, Marilyn, who was also working at Continental. The two were married on February 21, 1962 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in East Northport NY. The couple was transferred with the company and lived in Charleston SC and Maryland before settling in Charlotte, NC in 1979.
Harold and Marilyn were members of St. John Neumann Catholic Church for over 40 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #7343. Hal served as the Council's First Star Grand Knight. He was one of the Founding Members of the K of C 4th Degree at St. John Neumann. He later served as Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree. Hal was very active in coordinating the Fifty Plus Club, Bingo and planned many trips and events in service to the Church.
Hal was a great cook and enjoyed entertaining at home. He also enjoyed gardening, woodworking and travel. Hal joined VFW Post #9488 as a Life Member when he moved to Charlotte NC. His wonderful stories, twinkling humor and quiet demeanor will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Harold is survived by nephew Ronald Bittleman and Kenneth Bittleman both of Arizona. He is also survived by his Mother-in-Law Louise Anna Blowers (nee Hoffmann) and three Sister-in-Laws': Emma (Cookie) Amoreisky of NY; Sandra Knolle of Florida; and Louann Arp of NY.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Clara Bittleman, his wife, Marilyn Louise Bittleman (nee Blowers); brother Raymond and wife Joan Bittleman; brother Samuel and wife Anne Bittleman and Sister Eleanor and husband Frank Olish.
In honor of his faith, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, August 18, 2022 at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 8451 Idlewild Rd Charlotte, NC 28227 followed immediately by a reception in the Church Hall.
Interment will be held at 10 AM on Friday, August 19, 2022 at the Salisbury National Cemetery Annex, 501 Statesville Blvd. Salisbury NC 28144.
