Harold Edwin "Uncle Shed" Branson, 102, passed away Sunday, December 18, 2022, at Genesis Hospice Morrison House. He was born December 7, 1920, in Zanesville to the late Frank and Lucy Workman Branson. Harold was a true American hero who served our country and protected our freedom during World War II, Korean War and the Vietnam War in the United States Army. He entered active duty on November 13, 1942, at Fort Hayes in Columbus, Ohio. He was then shipped to Besserti, North Africa; then to Naples, Italy, Foggia Main Airport, attached to the 15th Army Airforce to a Signal Battalion, where their mission was to build telephone lines for communication. On February 1, 1951, he was assigned to Company L Second Battalion, Engineers School for three years. On December 23, 1964, he was shipped to Vietnam. He retired from active-duty Army service February 28, 1969. He received the following awards: Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, American Theatre Ribbon with two bronze stars, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service, World War II Victory Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal.
He was a longtime member of St. Paul AME Church and has now been attending Greater Apostolic Church of Christ. He also was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post #29 and past member of the Zanesville Esquire Club. He enjoyed going to the Muskingum County Senior Center and loved to walk.
Surviving is his nephew: Ronald (Sheila) Branson; great nephew Tony (Robin) Hardin; great niece Tiffany Branson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers: Wilbur Branson and Edwin Branson; and sister Geneva McClain.
Calling hours will be from 10AM to 12PM Thursday, December 22 at THE SNOUFFER FUNERAL HOME 1150, WEST MILITARY ROAD, ZANESVILLE. Funeral service will begin at 12PM with Elder Terrance Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery with full military honors.
