Harold Carbaugh Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home - Saint Thomas on Aug. 28, 2025.
Harold Eugene Carbaugh walked into the arms of Jesus August 28, 2025. He was born October 4, 1953, the youngest of four sons to Earl J and Dorothy E (Ensminger) Carbaugh. He lived his entire life in Cove Gap.

He married his loving wife Carole Calimer Carbaugh November 2, 1985. She devoted the last 7 years to caring for him every day. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter and caregiver, Shay (Bitner) Goetz, her husband Nick, grandchildren Chesney and Gabe Carbaugh. A special niece and great nephew Carol and Jacob Zeger who were also caregivers. Sons Chris and Curtis Carbaugh, grandchildren Spencer Carbaugh and Braylin Cruz. Daughter-in-law Rebecca Carbaugh. Daughter Jessica Carbaugh and granddaughter Victoria. Great grandchildren Gracelynn Bishop, Mateo and Rafe Cruz. Brothers Dave and Carl (Charlotte) Carbaugh. Sister-in-law Delores Carbaugh along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Dorothy Carbaugh; his eldest brother Charles Carbaugh and his Son-in-Law Edward E Carbaugh II.

He graduated from James Buchanan High School with the Class of 1972. As a teen he started to work for his late father Earl J. Carbaugh Contractor & Builder. After his father's death he worked for his brothers at Carbaugh Brothers Construction. Harold spent 21 years with Rockwell Construction before going to be a member of the road crew with St Thomas Township for 18 ½ years. He retired early in July 2017 due to the progression of his Alzheimer's.

Just after high school he joined MMPW Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company in 1973 where he was an apparatus driver and an active volunteer. He served on their Board of Directors from 2001 to 2020. He remained active with the department until the later days of his illness.

He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States with his wife. He especially liked Colorado. He and Carole spent many years camping often taking Chesney and Gabe along. They enjoyed old country, gospel and bluegrass music going to concerts as often as possible. In their later years they started taking bus trips with old friends and made many new friends. They enjoyed going out to eat and had several groups they went with monthly. Up until May 2025, they took Silver Sneakers classes and worked out at the Fulton County Health and Wellness Center. They volunteered together for the Waynesboro Gala Cancer Auction for 25 years, at the Fulton County Medical Center Long Term Care and with Mount Olivet Church.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND FLOWERS. As Alzheimer's took many things from his memory, there were two important things that Harold still remembered and that brought him joy. They were his love of the Lord and MMPW Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Company. Please consider donating the money you would spend on flowers to either of these - Mount Olivet Church, 8204 Fort McCord Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202 or MMPW Volunteer Fire and Ambulance Co, 132 North Main Street, Mercersburg, PA 17236

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, September 20, at 2:00 PM at Kelso-Cornelius Funeral Home, Ltd., 6492 Lincoln Way West, St. Thomas, PA with Pastor Stan McCammon officiating. A visitation will be held from 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM before the service at the funeral home.

Carole and family,
I am saddened to hear of Harold's passing. Other than church at Salem, a fond memory was trying (and failing) to catch crawdads in the creek at a picnic back when I was an early teen. You are all in my thought during this time.
