It is with great sorrow and heavy hearts that we share the homegoing of our beloved father, Harold Hill Johnston, age 96, of Milner, Georgia. The Lord called him to glory on November 4, 2025. He passed away in his home with his daughters by his side. Harold was born in Rock Springs, Georgia on September 1, 1929, to the late Walter Hill Johnston and Cordie Mae Nichols. He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Alice Josephine Eason and his brother Oliver Amos Johnston.
Harold served four years in the United States Air Force. He worked as a jet aircraft mechanic. After his military service, he attended South Georgia Trade and Vocational School in Americus to acquire an airframe and powerplant license. While living there, he met his bride to be, Josephine Eason. On March16,1956, he was hired by Eastern Airlines. He married Josephine in August of the same year. He worked as a lead mechanic for thirty-two years. He took an early retirement at age 58 before Eastern Airlines went out of business. He worked in his son-in-law's cabinet shop for several years before completely retiring.
He was always quietly busy. He never did anything fast. He was just steady and sure. He enjoyed working with his hands. He made an electric lawnmower while in his twenties. He built many pieces of furniture, including two grandfather clocks, a dining room suite, a bedroom suite, end tables, and two mantles. He made his first colored TV from a kit. He fixed dishwashers, refrigerators, washing machines, lawn mowers, tillers, etc. He restored an old Farmall Cub tractor. He loved gardening and continued to hoe and pick peas and beans in his early 90's. He also loved to read and study the Bible. He listened to many sermons. This was especially helpful when he could no longer see well enough to read. He was a faithful church member, and through the years he taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, built cabinets and podiums for the churches he attended, and participated in the jail ministry. He was always known for his patience, kindness, consistency, and dry humor. He put his family first and always stood firm on his convictions. He led with his Christian example and love. He was the faithful guide and guardian of our home.
Mr. Johnston is survived by his two daughters, Wanda (Rennie) Mussell and Lisa (Stephen) Smith; seven grandchildren and three great-granddaughters; and many nieces and nephews
The family will receive friends Sunday, November 9, 2025, from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM at Haisten McCullough Funeral Home with the funeral service beginning at 3:00 PM in the chapel. The burial will follow at adjacent Westwood Gardens.
