Harold William "Spud" Turney Jr. "OPAENYAK", 72, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025, surrounded by love.
Spud was born July 15, 1952, in Chicago, Illinois, a son of the late Harold "Rusty" Turney and Gloria "Midge" Waupoose Turney Herrera. He lived in various places before settling with his grandparents, Alex Sr. and Sarah Warrington-Waupoose, in South Branch.
Spud was a man of deep tradition, quiet strength, and many talents. When he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1969, he proudly served his country with honor. After completing training, he was deployed to Okinawa and then to South Vietnam. He served three years and was honorably discharged, receiving multiple medals in recognition of his service. Being a Vietnam War veteran reflected his courage, commitment, and deep sense of duty.
A skilled guitar player, Spud filled countless days with music. His creativity knew no bounds-he was a master beadwork artist and a respected maker of Pipestone pipes, crafting each piece with meaning and care.
He was a devoted Green Bay Packers fan, always cheering for his team with unwavering loyalty. A lifelong Star Wars enthusiast, Spud found joy and imagination in that galaxy far, far away. He also had a deep appreciation for classic black-and-white films, drawn to their timeless storytelling.
Family was the center of his world. He is survived by his brothers, David Turney Sr. and Raymond Herrera Sr., and by his children: Alexandra Greyhair, Mike Tucker (Judy), AlQoyawayma Baddmoccosin- Barnes (Amanda), Manih Turney, Macanmeta Turney, Sosah Turney, Kawtnih Munoz (Genaro), and Piataewsikah Turney. He is further survived by his godson, Dave Turney Jr.; and many nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in his heart.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Turney Sr.; mother, Gloria Waupoose Turney Herrera; his stepfather, Richard Herrera; his beloved wife, Diana Marie Tucker Turney; and his grandparents, Alex Sr. and Sarah Josephine Waupoose.
His legacy continues through his 25 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immeasurable joy.
He shared a special bond with several of his grandsons, including Daniel R. Greyhair Jr., United States Marine Corps; Daunte Greyhair; Nekoneskawah Turney; and Anthony Dominguez-each of whom held a special place in his heart.
Visits to Spud's home were always filled with warmth, laughter, and love. He kept a cherished box of toys for his grandchildren and a candy dish that was never empty-a simple, sweet reminder of how much he cared.
Harold William "Spud" Turney will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His legacy of service, creativity, generosity, and love lives on in the hearts of his family and all those whose lives he touched.
A traditional funeral service for Harold will be held on Thursday, May 22, 2025, at 11:00 am at the David Turney residence, W2375 Lamotte Lake Road, Keshena, Wisconsin. Visitation will begin at the Turney residence on Monday, May 19, 2025, after 4:00 pm until the time of service on Thursday. Harold's final resting place will be at Menominee Nation Cemetery in Middle Village.
