It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Harriet Jane Pedone, who departed this life on September 24, 2025, at the age of ninety-three, after a brief battle with cancer. She was surrounded by loved ones in Mentor, Ohio, leaving behind cherished memories and an enduring legacy.
Born on September 14, 1932, in Griswold, Connecticut, Harriet was the daughter of the late Marcus and Ruth (Enos) Barstow. Harriet met and married her beloved husband, Joseph Pedone, in Moosup, Connecticut. They resided in Connecticut, New York City, and then raised their family in Euclid, Ohio. They moved to
Willoughby, Ohio when they became empty nesters. They were married for 53 years until Joe's passing in 2006. Harriet resided at Vitalia Senior Living in Mentor for the last year.
Throughout her life, Harriet was known for her zest for life. Harriet served as a teacher's aide in the Euclid Public Schools and subsequently worked in the Children's Room at the Euclid Public Library, as well as in several school libraries within the Euclid Public School District. Harriet was known for her entertaining children's story hours, where she encouraged children to take an active part in the story activities. After retiring from Euclid, Harriet worked part time at the Kirkland Public Library for 9 more years, leading a popular story hour. Harriet was a long-time member of the Cleveland Touring Club. Harriet and Joe enjoyed numerous long distance cycling events and rode their bikes in Europe and Canada. Harriet loved cross country skiing at Chapin Reservation and took a yearly ski trip with friends to Burlington, Vermont. Harriet also enjoyed birding, ice skating, downhill skiing, and she participated in cross country ski races. Hiking, kayaking, and classes at the YMCA brought Harriet immense joy. Harriet was active in the Blackbrook Audubon Society, and she volunteered with the Lake County Metro Parks. Harriet loved going to the opera, ballet, and the Cleveland Orchestra. She enjoyed playing the piano and the dulcimer. Harriet traveled to Europe and many destinations for birding, cycling, and wildlife excursions. She has made many precious lifelong friends while pursuing her passions in life. Harriet was the beloved and nurturing mother of Jeanne Pasco, Joseph (Marlene) Pedone, Nancy Pedone Lee, and Catherine Seufert. She was the cherished grandmother of Tara Pasco (Jason Robinson), Brandon Lee, Evan Lee, Joseph Pedone III, Stephen Pedone, Will Pasco (Liliana Peralta), Caitlin Seufert, and Collin Seufert. She was the proud great grandmother to Joseph Robinson. She was the dear sister of Barbara Turenne, Grace LaRue, Sarah Bellavance, Mary Riley, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her dear husband, Jospeh Pedone, sisters Beverly Setterstrom, Clara Rakowski, Susanna Strazenbach, Ruth Chevrette, and her brother Marcus Barstow Jr.
The Pedone family will receive family and friends on Thursday October 2 at the Brickman Bros. Funeral Home, 37433 Euclid Ave,
Willoughby, OH from 3:00-6:00 pm with a celebration of life taking place at the funeral home from 6:00-7:00 pm. All who knew and loved Harriet are welcome to attend and celebrate her remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made in Harriet's memory to the
American Cancer Society or a
charity of your choice. Harriet's warmth, kindness, and active lifestyle was an inspiration to her family and friends. Harriet's legacy will continue through the memories she created and the love she shared. She will be deeply missed and forever in our hearts.
