Harriet Jane Phelps, aged 80, passed away peacefully on August 15 , 2024, in her beloved hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana, where she was born on March 7, 1944. Harriet was a remarkable woman who touched the lives of many her unwavering dedication to her work and her loving family.
Harriet began her professional journey at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, where she dedicated 14 years of her life. She commenced her career as a cashier when the hotel first opened in 1977, demonstrating exceptional skill and diligence that allowed her to rise to the esteemed position of director of purchasing. Following her time at the Hyatt, Harriet continued to serve her community by taking on a similar role at the Indianapolis Zoo, where she worked for several years before retiring. Her career not only exemplifies her strong work ethic but also her commitment to excellence in every endeavor she undertook.
A proud graduate of Harry E. Wood High School, Harriet maintained close ties with her academic roots and cherished the memories of her youth spent in Indianapolis.
Harriet is survived by her devoted children, Kimberly (Daniel), Mary, and Thomas. She was a proud grandmother to Stephen (Caitlinn), James (Katelynn), Brandon, Tyler, Dylan, Kaleigh, and Carly. Her legacy continues with her great-grandchildren: Ameracis, Bailey, Kendall, and James, along with her great-great-grandsons, Kaymair and Brandon Jr. Harriet was also deeply cherished by her brothers, Harley (Diane) and Carson (Becky), and she held a special place in her heart for her several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her loving parents, Carvle and Iva Johnson; her husband, Carl T. Phelps; her brothers, Paul, Frank, John, and Carlos; and her sister, Martha. The memories of her loved ones who have passed on will forever be a part of her story.
Friends and family are invited to pay their respects during the visitations scheduled at Newcomer Funeral Home located at 925 E Hanna Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46227. The visitation will take place on August 22, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and again on August 23, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
Harriet Jane Phelps will be remembered not only for her professional achievements but also for her warm spirit and the memories she created with those she loved. Her legacy will undoubtedly live on through the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her.
