Harriett Carmichael, a beloved cornerstone of the Marion community and a cherished family matriarch, departed from this world on July 14, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on January 4, 1930, in Marion, she lived her life with an unwavering devotion to her family, her career, and her passions, leaving a vibrant legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew her.
Harriett dedicated many years to serving as a secretary at Riverview Elementary School, where her gentle presence and unfaltering support touched the lives of countless students and teachers alike. She was not just an employee; she was a beacon of warmth and kindness in the school's halls, fostering an environment where learning thrived. Her commitment to education was only rivaled by her spirited participation in various community activities, including her esteemed role as a lifetime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and as an engaging participant in the Calico Sets square dancing club. In her personal life, Harriett found joy in simple pleasures. She had a fervent love for flower gardening, a hobby that transformed her home into a captivating oasis of color and scent. Her creative energy also extended to decorating her home, where every corner reflected her warmth and personality. However, it was the time spent with her family that brought her the greatest joy, marked by lively Scrabble tournaments that will be remembered fondly by all her loved ones. Among her cherished memories, Harriett fondly recalled the time spent with Dick Van Dyke, who visited her home, an encounter that she relished, showcasing her unique ability to connect with others, no matter their stature.
She is survived by her adoring children, daughter Janet (Rick) Jones, sons Pat and David Carmichael, and her grandchildren, Eric (Tara Parker) Carmichael, Corey Carmichael, Adam Jones, and Alex (Emily Everingham) Jones. The legacy of love continues through her great-grandchildren, Makena (Dawson Essig) Carmichael, Brevin Carmichael, Casen Carmichael, and Kali Jones, and many loving nieces and nephews who will carry her spirit forward. Harriett's life was deeply intertwined with family, and she navigated the joys and challenges of life with grace and humor. Following her passing, she joins her beloved husband of seventy-four years, Garl Carmichael, who preceded her in death on June 15, 2023, as well as her parents, Chester L. and Audrey Russell, and sister Jackie Mauk, all of whom she remains forever in heart and memory. Her departure is felt deeply by the community, yet her legacy of kindness, joy, and unwavering love will echo through the lives she touched.
Farewell, dear Harriett; your light will forever shine in the hearts of those who knew you. Visitation will be held on July 24, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, followed by a Memorial Service commencing at 3:00 PM, at Raven Choate Robinson Funeral Home, located at 1202 West Kem Road, Marion, IN 46952.
