Harry Altick Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Poway Bernardo Mortuary - Poway on Sep. 30, 2023.
Harry Altick, a beloved father, grandfather, son, sailor, and adventurer, passed away on September 27 at the age of 83 in San Diego, California. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, on November 1, 1939, and was raised in Birmingham, Michigan, by his loving parents, Harry J. Altick and Amy Jane Altick.
Harry's life was marked by an adventurous spirit and a passion for embracing new experiences, nature, and time with his beloved family. He loved football and rugby, golden retriever puppies and musicals, a truly wide range of all life has to offer. Yet nothing was more important to Harry than ensuring everyone around him was comfortable, happy, and always having fun.
He embarked on his path to adulthood at Dartmouth College, where he became a cherished member of various groups, including the famed Dartmouth Glee Club, Dartmouth Rugby team, and Dartmouth crew team. His love for Rugby passed onto his son Ryan, and he would join Ryan on Rugby tours across the country and in Europe.
His time at Dartmouth included a remarkable performance with the glee club (including a solo he would always remind his family of) alongside the famed Rockettes at Radio City Music Hall, a memory forever cherished. His infectious enthusiasm even led to an impromptu game of softball on the roof of the iconic venue with the Rockettes.
After college, Harry's path led him to Sausalito, California, and the beautiful San Francisco Bay Area. It was after a rugby game against Cal Berkeley that he first set his eyes on the San Francisco Bay, and in that moment, he knew he could never return to the snowy winters of his youth. California became his forever home.
In the 1970s, Harry discovered his true passion – sailing. He purchased his beloved sailboat, "Sunchaser," a Palmer Johnson vessel that became the center of his life and adventures. "Sunchaser" was not just a boat; it was an extension of Harry's spirit and love for the sea. Together, they conquered the waves and won numerous races as part of the San Francisco Yacht Club. One of the proudest achievements of his life was clinching the 1972 Perpetual Cup Trophy, a testament to Harry's determination and skill as a sailor.
Harry Altick leaves behind a legacy of living life to the fullest, pursuing his passions with unwavering dedication, and embracing the healing nature of water on the soul. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, but his adventurous spirit and gentle demeanor will forever live on in the memories he created and the stories he shared.
Harry is survived by his children, Christina Altick and Ryan Altick, daughter in law Ashley Altick and his 2 beloved grandchildren, 6-month-old Jack Altick and 2-year-old Blake Altick. Harry will also be incredibly missed by his Stepchildren, Javied Bayat, Shakira Blair, Brandon Carlson and former wife Marisa. His spirit of kindness, sensitivity, and love for his family above all will continue to flourish through his surviving family members.
A celebration of Harry's life will be held in the spring of 2024.

I lived across the street from Harry, growing up in Birmingham, Michigan. At one time, we had a special telephone line running from my room to his. I was a year younger than he and followed him to Dartmouth. Later I stayed with him briefly when he was living in Corte Madera, California. We stayed in touch for many years, but I had lost contact in the last year or two. My condolences to the Altick family. His parents, Harry J. and Amy, were dear friends of our family. Dick Bragaw
