Harry "Wayne" Comer, 79, of Shenandoah, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at home surrounded by his family.
Wayne was born in Shenandoah on February 3, 1944, to Harry Jack and Oneta Pearl Lucas Comer. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Vincent "Buddy" Comer.
Wayne was a devoted family man. On January 11, 1963, he married Joyce Ann Nauman who survives. He is also survived by three sons, Timmy (Claire), Paul (Tammy), and Shaun (Alison), and two sisters, Joyce Shifflett and Gloria Austin (Larry). Wayne dearly loved his ten grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and 25 nieces and nephews. Six brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law also survive.
Wayne was a 1962 graduate of Page County High School. Following his passion for baseball, he signed with the Washington Senators in 1962. During his Major League Baseball career, he played for the Washington Senators, Seattle Pilots, Milwaukee Brewers, and the Detroit Tigers where he was a member of the 1968 World Series Championship team. Wayne later devoted himself to coaching, leading numerous teams including 16 years at his alma mater, Page County High School.
The family will receive friends at Kyger Funeral Home in Elkton, Virginia on Friday, October 6, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted at New Life Gospel Church, 1309 Shenandoah River Rd. in Shenandoah on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow at Nauman Family Cemetery in Stanley.
Memorial contributions may be made to Wayne's beloved church, New Life Gospel in Shenandoah, Virginia.
