Harry F. Downes, a devoted husband, proud father and friend to many, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 29, 2025, at the age of 89. His life was a shining example of kindness, humility, and quiet strength, and he leaves behind a legacy of love and faith that will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Born in Fitchburg, MA on July 21, 1936, to Harry F Downes & Katherine Mulloy .Harry graduated from St. Bernard’s High School in 1955. A talented athlete, he was drafted by the Cleveland Indians, but chose instead a life of service to his country, enlisting in the U.S. Navy for four years. This decision reflected who he was at his core—selfless, honorable, and always willing to put others before himself.
Following his service, Harry built a long and respected career at Raytheon, where he worked for more than 30 years. Though his professional accomplishments were many, his greatest pride was in his family. Together with Dorothy R. [Reinbold], he raised three children, teaching them the values of hard work, integrity, and compassion—values he lived out every day.
Harry was a man of many passions and simple joys. A lifelong Boston Red Sox fan, he was proud to be a season ticket holder and loved going to games and sharing the experience with others. He also loved spending time on the golf course, where his easygoing spirit and love of the game brought joy to friends and family alike. He was a proud member of the St. Joseph’s Club and will be remembered as a true gentleman—always gracious, thoughtful, and ready with a kind word or a helping hand.
Harry is survived by a sister Joan (Downes) Frigoletto, his three children Deidra Zarrella of Bourne, Gregory Downes of Ashburnham, Kelley Dyment & her husband Todd of Bolton. Eight grandchildren Casey Downes & his wife Maddie, Maddison Williams & her husband Daniel, Zoey & Tatum Dyment, Bianca, Dominique, Zachary & Giavanna Zarrella, 3 great-grandchildren Theo, Cooper & Ruby Williams. As well as many nieces & nephews.
Family meant everything to Harry, and he created lasting traditions that his grandchildren will never forget. Each Christmas, he filled a jar with coins and had all the grandchildren guess how many were inside—the winner earning a special prize. It was just one of the many ways he brought fun, laughter, and love into their lives.
To know Harry was to experience his warmth, generosity, and love. He touched countless lives and will be deeply missed, but the example he set and the faith he carried will continue to guide and inspire those fortunate enough to have known him.
