Harvey Bonen

Harvey Bonen, 90, Bowdle, died Tuesday, November 26, 2024 at the Bowdle Nursing Home.
Private graveside services, led by Pastor Janet Sandmeier, will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery, Bowdle. Military rites will be presented by the Bowdle American Legion Post No. 264, Bowdle, SD. Bearers will be sons Marc and Scott.
Harvey Henry Bonen, son of Emma (Haberer) and Emil Bonen, was born August 26, 1934 near Hoven, SD. After High School graduation, Harvey served his country in the United States Army, being inducted April 15, 1954. He was honorably discharged April 13, 1956. Harvey married Karen Aman on March 17, 1957. They lived in Lead while Harvey was employed at Homestake Gold Mine. In 1962, they settled in Bowdle. They purchased the Nels Waltman Confectionery and opened Harvey's Place, which was known for the coldest beer and frosted mugs. The Bonen's sold the business after 20 years and Harvey began working as a Rural Mail Carrier in Java, SD. He retired in 2011 and lived the rest of his life in Bowdle. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bowdle, and the Bowdle American Legion Post. Harvey enjoyed attending his grandchildren's events, rooting for the Minnesota Vikings, and fishing.
Harvey is survived by Karen, his wife of 67 years; three sons-Marc (Connie) Bonen and James Bonen of Aberdeen, SD, and Scott (Angy) Bonen of Coggon, Iowa; one daughter, Nicole Fletcher of Beatrice, NE; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Emil, on April 12, 1988; his mother, Emma, on May 2, 1984; one daughter, Terri Lynn, at five months; two brothers, and two sisters.
Services are in care of Lien Funeral Home, Bowdle.
