Hascal Lavern "H.L." Davis passed away January 4, 2025, one month shy of 95 years old. The fourth of four sons, he was born February 6, 1930, in Lumberton, MS, to Murphy and Willie Mae Davis. Lavern enjoyed a long, healthy, and happy life which was filled with laughter, love for his family, and treating others as you would have them treat you.
Lavern was married to Joanna Hartley for 74 wonderful years. They were together until her death in 2022.
Lavern spent most of his early life as an auto mechanic working with his brother Murphy Davis at Davis Auto Repair in downtown Jackson. This led him to open his own business, Southwest Auto Service in 1975, and he operated the business for many years in Jackson. In 1996, Lavern helped start another business in Byram, MS, called, Davis Tire & Auto Service. He worked full and part time until the age of 88 when he permanently retired from working.
Lavern and Joanna were members of Daniel Memorial Baptist Church in Jackson, MS. After moving to Byram, they began attending Country Woods Baptist Church.
Anyone who knew Lavern would tell you that he was a kind and generous man. He treated everyone with kindness and respect. He often said, "If you treat people kind, they will treat you kind". He lived out the Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" -Luke 6:31. He instilled this in his children and grandchildren with not only his words but his actions. He will certainly be remembered for his generosity and helping others when they were in need.
Lavern is survived by his daughters, Kathy Germany (Glenn) of Madison, MS; Carolyn Thomas (Randy) of Flowood, MS; and sons, Larry Davis (Debra) of Brandon, MS; Chuck Davis (Debbie) of Clinton, MS; and Bill Davis (DeLynn) of Clinton, MS. He leaves an amazing legacy with 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and 2 great, great grandchildren along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to especially thank caregivers, Betty Johnson, Linda Neal, and Doris Green for taking exceptional care of both he and Mrs. Joanna as their health declined in later years.
