Hazel Evans Obituary
Hazel Lavelle (Johnson) Evans was born January 9th, 1949 in Helena, AR. Hazel was the second oldest
child out of twenty children, and the firstborn daughter to Calvin and Lizzie Jane Johnson, who both
preceded her in death.
Hazel received Christ at an early age. She was baptized at Galilee Baptist Church in Helena, AR. Hazel
began high school in Arkansas but relocated to Chicago before graduating. Hazel left Chicago to move to
Grand Rapids, MI, to embark on new adventures with the love of her life Andrew L. Evans. The two
married in 1967. Out of this union their daughter was born, Renee Evans-Lewis (Nea-Nea). Then later in
life, a bouncing baby boy Samuel J. Evans (Big Worm) was born.
Years later, she returned to Chicago and earned her GED, which was something she was so proud of
completing. This completion allowed her to become employed at Cook DuPage Transportation where
she worked for several years until she was unable to work anymore.
Hazel loved her some old school music and man could she cut a rug. Bid Whist player and a spade
smack talker she was. Hazel had a smile that would melt your heart, but don't piss her off, she would
cut you with her tongue, and then punch you in the throat. Hazel was very protective over her family.
Now, they could go toe to toe with each other, but don't you put your foot in between, because BABY,
you would feel the wrath of her and whoever she is arguing with. Those Johnson siblings stick together.
Knuck if you Buck! LBVS!! Hazel was very well known, for volunteering in various Grand Rapids
community events. Hazel was loved and admired by so many. She will be missed.
On June 15, 2024, at the age of 75, Hazel L. Evans departed this life to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ. She leaves to cherish her daughter Renee Evans-Lewis, her son Samuel Evans who preceded her
in death. 10 Grand Children Quinten Sampson (Alexandra), Demetrius Johnson (Unique), Dayon Lewis,
