Hazel Marie Neuhaus was born October 26, 1921 to Paul and Martha (Muchow) Neuhaus in Swift County where she grew up on a farm and attended school in a one room country school through the 8th grade. She married Orville Payne at St. Johns Lutheran Church near Benson in 1939. They lived on a farm in Swift County until 1946, then farmed in Chippewa County until 1951 when they moved to Cyrus where the lived for 19 years. Besides working on the farm, Hazel worked at Fingerhut in Benson and at the U of M Morris in the cafeteria. Hazel also worked at the Villas of Morris and at the Cyrus Public School cafeteria. Orville and Hazel moved to Starbuck in 1970 where they enjoyed their homes in town and on Lake Minnewaska. They spent many winters in Alamo, Texas where they enjoyed the warm weather, golfing, going across the border to Mexico and socializing with many friends. Hazel also enjoyed still life and oil painting while living in Texas. In 1995 Hazel moved to Alexandria where she became an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church. She enjoyed her life at Cedar Hills Condominiums and all of her wonderful friends there. She loved taking care of the flowers, embroidering dish towels, baking, and always looked forward to her morning coffee with her dear friends. She will be remembered in Alexandria for her spunky personality and fashionable attire. Hazel died peacefully surrounded by her family on February 10, 2009 at the age 87. She is survived by one brother, Richard Neuhaus of Santa Monica, CA; three sons and two daughters. Ken (Janice) of Rogers, children Jody Payne and Jackie (Lane) Noetzelman; Roger?s children, Elise (Brian) LaPlace and Audra (Steve) Boney; Diane (Duane) Lokken of Alexandria, children, Todd Lokken, Stephanie (Kevin) Barthell, and Deb (Mike) Kittridge; Gary (Kathie) Payne of Cyrus, children, Maurya (Tony) Eystad, Tory (Jackie) Payne, Dena (Scott) Carbert, and Brian Payne; Julie Tyler of Golden Valley, children, Amy (Dan) Keniston and Elizabeth Tyler; Terry (Dot) Payne of Mesa, AZ, children, Jennifer and Melissa Payne; 20 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents, husband Orville in 1988, three brothers, Floyd, Norman, and Robert, one sister, Ellen Frey, and one son, Roger. A funeral service was held at Calvary Lutheran Church on Monday February 16, 2009 with the Rev. Mark Astrup, officiating. Becky Worley provided the music. Interment was at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Cyrus, MN with the Rev. John Smith, officiating. Pallbearers are: Marvin Hagen, Todd Lokken, Tory Payne, Lane Noetzelman, Brian Payne and Dan Keniston. Honorary Pallbearers include all of Hazel?s dear friends. Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home.
