C & S Fredlock Funeral Home - Oakland ChapelHazel Mae (Steiding) Sherwood, 98, formerly of Oakland and most recently, Morgantown, died on July 24, 2025, at Harmony of Morgantown. Born on May 16, 1927, in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Charles Albert and Mae Belle (Cunningham) Steiding.
Hazel was a graduate of Bruce High School and West Virginia Wesleyan College, where she earned her bachelor's degree. She was a librarian at Ruth Enlow Library in Oakland and the Bluefield Public Library in Bluefield, Virginia. A long-time member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, she participated in various local, district, and conference roles within the United Methodist Church. Hazel was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Oakland Chapter 67, and the Oakland Civic Club. In her personal time, she enjoyed reading, knitting, sewing, and cross-stitch.
She is survived by her children, Rebecca Fallon of Deer Park, John Sherwood and wife Debbie of Hinton, WV, Martha Ognibene and husband Bart Thompson of Morgantown, and Mary Dreibelbis and husband Harold of Cincinnati, OH; grandchildren, Benjamin Bertz, Jeremiah Bertz, Timothy Schaumburg and husband Keith Loudermill, Jennifer Schaumburg and husband Brendan Smith, Adrienne Ognibene and husband Andrew Cybulska, James Ognibene and wife Asia, Kelsey (Ognibene) Stancliffe and husband Jason, Sara Dreibelbis and husband Ben Linser; great grandchildren, Andrew Sherwood, Cora Stancliffe, and Silas Ognibene.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 72 years, Lawrence Franklin Sherwood, Jr.; daughter, Judith Schaumburg; and grandson, Matthew Sherwood.
Mrs. Sherwood's request for cremation was honored. Friends will be received on Saturday, September 6, 2025, from 11 AM to 12 PM, at the St. Paul's United Methodist Church. A celebration of life will be held at 12 PM in the church with Pastor Jim Martin officiating. Interment will follow in the Oakland Cemetery.
