HAZEL SUTHERLAND Obituary

SUTHERLAND, Hazel F. (Rabeaux) Age 96 of Framingham, formerly of Brookline and New Iberia, LA, died peacefully on October 25, 2024, at St. Patrick's Manor in Framingham, after a long battle with dementia. The 9th child (of twelve) of Joseph Rabeaux and Marie Rabeaux (Touchet) of New Iberia, LA. Hazel was preceded in death by her loving husband of 65 years, Alexander J. Sutherland ("Joe"); also, her siblings, Louise Gary, Louisa Vincent (Amos), Elizabeth Boutte (Otto), Davis Rabeaux (Belle), Eunice (Sug) Besse (John), Gladys Landry (Alwin), Lorraine O'Neal (Red), Lillian Rabeaux, Robert Rabeaux (Marg), Winnie Mae Broussard (Cecil) and Barbara Blanchard. Loving mother of Alexander J. Sutherland, Jr., Dean Sutherland (Terry) of Southboro, Janet Michelin (Rich) of Las Vegas, Nv., and Michelle Sutherland and husband James Daley of Framingham, MA. Adoring grandmother of Nicole Kasper (Steve), Nolan Sutherland (Tatiana), Jonathan Sutherland (Jesse), Patrick Sutherland (Amy), Richard Michelin (Holly), Gabrielle Daley (Victor) and Beaux Daley; as well as 9 great-grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews. Hazel worked for many years at American Mutual Insurance Company in Chestnut Hill, MA, before her retirement in 1991. Hazel loved her family immensely. She enjoyed many happy times with her Louisiana/Texas clan. She cherished a special bond with her ten sisters, who meant the world to her. But, spending time with, and watching her grandchildren grow, gave Hazel the most pleasure. They will hold dear the memories they have of her. An avid knitter, Hazel created many beautiful sweaters, including intricate Irish knits. She also made countless sweater/blanket sets donated to various hospital NICU's in the Boston area, all stitched with love. Her gardening skills were equally matched and she was especially proud of her roses. Many of her neighbors were often delighted to receive fresh vegetables grown in her garden. However, nothing compared to Hazel's cooking skills. This is where her southern roots shone with lemon meringue and pecan pies, penuche/divinity/and chocolate fudge, as well as her incredibly delicious Cajun meals, like red beans & rice, shrimp etouffee and too many more to list. Hazel's wonderful dishes and treats will be remembered, and her recipes shared with generations to come. Hazel's family would like to thank the loving staff and nurses at St Patrick's Manor who cared for her like she was their own. And, also the amazing staff at MetroWest Hospice. Our gratitude is beyond words. Hazel requested No Services and Interment will be Private at Walnut Hills, in Brookline, at a later date.

My Aunt Hazel was a loving, kind and generous person. We were always so happy anticipating her visits to "home" here in Louisiana. It meant we would have family get togethers, good food and tons of laughter. Miss those days.

Kudos to my loving cousin Michelle and husband Jim who as newlyweds built a home with an apartment for her parents to help them in their retirement years. "The simple act of caring is heroic." Edward Albert An added bonus was the bonding and love shared with Gabrielle and Beaux.

Aunt Hazel's and Uncle Joe's end years were beset with medical difficulties but Michelle and Jim handled it with strength and resilience.

Condolences to all. May she rest in peace.
